Screenprinting Tee Shirts: All About The Belt Dryer

This is another video from the very beginning of the YouTube channel’s 2 year history. At this time I was making videos which covered the basic equipment which I though was most important. I had started with the textile press and here I went on to cover the belt oven or what is sometimes called the belt dryer. Since most all of  my videos deal with plastisol inks, I figured covering the machine used to cure plastisol inks was critical. This is one of those first videos where you can see my nervousness and inhibitions coming through.

But despite my obvious limitations in video making the video turned out quite well. I talk about the temperatures needed to cure plastisol inks as well as the tool used to measure that temperature in this video. If you have never worked with plastisol inks before, then this is one of those videos you shouldn’t miss. And if you are looking to screen print tee shirts at home for the first time, you  may want to watch this video as well. It is often helpful to see how the professionals do things in order to help you figure out how to do it at home.

I think when I get all new equipment for the Catspit shop, I will remake a lot of these equipment videos. I’ll get to feature new equipment that I sell and remake the video with all my latest and greatest video making skills. And they will be in the new HD format as well. I have to say, I am having a lot of fun making videos for YouTube. And I want to make better videos all time. So make sure to stay tuned to the blog, website and YouTube channel for the latest screen printing videos.

New Video: How To Heat Transfer Tee Shirts

I finally made an all new, condensed version of the older heat transfer videos. This is a new 1 part video that is intended to update and answer many questions raised by he original 2 part video about the Avery inkjet heat transfers. I thought this would be a great way to answer the questions while making a better, easier to understand video. It is also the first video featuring the all new Catspit intro video clip with he new intro music by yours truly. I really like the way it turned out and I hope it isn’t creepy, ominous, intimidating or scary at all. I seem to have a thing about picking out music I think is all epic but turns out to be more frightening and strange than epic… LOL.

The new YouTube video is called, “How To Heat Transfer Tee Shirts”. In this video I attempt to answer the most popular questions from the original 2 part video. I get asked these same questions over and over so many times I thought it was about time to address them for everyone to benefit from. I also wrote a blog post about this transfer paper which also answers these questions in written form with a couple of pictures. You can read that blog post here: How To Print Digital Heat Transfers For Tee Shirts. I hope these new additions to the blog and YouTube channel will help with any confusion I may have created.

And remember to visit the Transfer Articles page of the website for more information about applying heat transfers to tee shirts and other garments. Thanks for reading! Learn how to heat transfer tee shirts with Catspit Productions, LLC!

How To Screen Print: All About The Press

I remember very well when I first began making screen printing videos for YouTube. I saw there were a few people making screenprinting videos already but some videos were preachy while others were nothing more than commercials. I thought why hasn’t anyone actually taught screen printing? They talk a lot about it but no one ever seemed to explain anything. They didn’t take the time to tell you about the process or the tools. I think that’s why this is still one of my favorite videos because it shows and explains the basic functions of the textile rotary screen printing press.

The video is called, “How To Screen Print: The Shirt Press”. Again this is back in the day when I was a bit more self conscious and I didn’t really know what I was doing in regards to making videos. But I managed to pack a lot of information into the video that I thought would help a beginner learn about how to use the press. I wanted to use a video to thoroughly cover the manual rotary screenprinting press like no other video on YouTube had before. At this time I didn’t think about the video too much before I made it other than what the topic would be. Today, I actually come up with a topic and then sketch out some notes on what scenes I want to do and what information I want to cover. However, in the end when you don’t have a script, it is difficult to be anywhere close to perfect. That’s what might make my videos so popular; the style of instruction is loose, knowledgeable and easy to understand. I don’t think I will ever use a script.

I’d like to do another one about the textile press which focuses on all of the functions of the press in an abridged manor. Stay tuned for that one. In the meantime if you want to learn about using a manual rotary screen printing press, check out this video. And make sure to visit the YouTube channel for the entire screenprinting video collection. Then when you have time you can also read this article on the website about the manual rotary press: http://catspitproductionsllc.com/manualrotarypress.aspx. That’s a great article about how to rotate and use the press when printing tee shirts.

New Entertainment Video: Gunfight 2, The Heist!

Hello everyone, I’m just stopping in to say hello and let you all know about the newest entertainment video uploaded to the YouTube channel. It’s a wild west video featuring the Goldfield Gunfighters. This is an all new video with a new story about a Wells Fargo heist. It has a bigger cast than the first Gunfight! video had and it also has some wild western women!

The new video is called, “Gunfight 2, The Heist!”. This is one of the first few videos I made with the new HD camera. It is also one of the last videos I will post that was edited with Windows Movie Maker. I have one more wild west gunfight video to upload that was edited with Movie Maker. After that, it will be all high quality Sony Vegas videos. I have finally learned enough to edit and render my HD videos with Vegas alone.

I think the quality of the videos processed with only Sony Vegas will be high enough quality to really warrant being called HD. And you should be able to see the difference I think. The video will be crisper and have sharper edges throughout. It’s definitely a lot more work to edit in Vegas rather than Movie Maker but I really like the results. And I’m loving the new intro that will premiere with the next heat transfer video.

Sony Vegas And The New Video Intro

I have made some great strides in working with Sony Vegas. I had noticed that the method of editing and formatting my HD videos was actually causing some loss in clarity. So I finally sat down and had a 12 round match up with Vegas and I can’t say I  won but I certainly went the full 12 rounds. I came out of it with enough skills to improve the quality of my HD videos even further. And I was able to spice up the video portion of the new video intro with some “active graphics”.

I learned one thing with Vegas and my computer. If I edit for a long time and then go directly to render, it will mess up the whole thing and produce some wild garbage that may or may not even be a video. So before I render, I have to close Vegas and restart the computer, just to make sure, then render the video in 1440 X 1080 HD format. The first thing I did after I realized this was to make a new video portion to the intro music I premiered last week. Then I went ahead and edited the next video for YouTube which will be a heat transfer video. It will be a condensed, one part version of the Avery heat transfer videos already posted. I hope it will clear up a few things too.

Therefore, the next actual how to video will be much better HD quality and it will have a brand new intro clip with new video added to the guitar rhythm I made myself. I had already edited and made the new gunfight videos the old way and they will  upload just the way they are. It would be too much work to go back and reedit the gunfight videos in Vegas. But those will be the last 2 videos where I used Windows Movie Maker to help edit. Vegas does take a lot more time for me to work with but it will produce much better video quality.

You can check out the new intro clip HERE.

I think I will upload the first of the two gunfight videos this Monday. Then the new heat transfer video will come next. Thanks for reading! Learn how to screen print with Catspit Productions LLC!

How To Print Digital Heat Transfers For Tee Shirts

This is a blog that has been a long time coming. I decided to write this material to supplement and support the 2 Avery heat transfer videos on YouTube. I hope this will clear up some of the confusion caused by the videos themselves. Granted, all of the following information is in the video either as annotations or related directly to you by me in the video. Even still, I am asked very simple questions on the matter and it seems some of the same questions are being asked over and over. So here we go…

First off let me say that the Avery heat transfers for light garments or tee shirts will not work on black or dark colored shirts. The transfers made for light garments lack the opacity to cover black or dark fabrics. Remember, standard computer printers do not print white. Therefore the digital transfer does not have any white in the image. The white in the image will come from the white or light colored garment. On a black shirt the image would be missing all white information in the design and the colored inks will not have the opacity to cover the dark fabric. Therefore a heat transfer for light garments applied to a dark shirt will almost disappear into the black fabric.

Now lets talk about the ghosting effect or the “halo”. It is the nature of the beast for inkjet or laser heat transfers to apply the polymer adhesive to the garment even in the areas where there isn’t any image printed. Now there are some “self weeding” transfer papers that will only transfer the adhesive where the inkjet ink or laser toner is. Those are 2 part processes in which the adhesive is transferred to the actual heat transfer right before you press the shirt. The result is a transfer that can do text and free floating objects without having a “halo” of adhesive through out the negative space. However, the Avery heat transfers for light garments are not self weeding and will leave polymer adhesive anywhere you do not have an image and haven’t trimmed the paper. So what is the best design type to use?

Any type of design that can be contained in a solid shape is perfect. Free floating text or design elements with intricate line work and a lot of negative space will not work so well with standard digital heat transfers for light garments. In the image to the left you can see how I took a design with a lot of negative spaces throughout the image and placed a solid shape in the background. I did this because it would have been extremely time consuming to sit there and cut out all of the negative space in this design. And that would have separated much of the transfer from itself as well. Since this was a prototype for me to get some feedback on the design, it worked out just fine for me. But when you create your artwork for standard heat transfers for light garments, it is critical to take this into account. If you can design the artwork to work with the limitations of the transfer process, you can make some really cool shirts at home.

At this point it is important to note that inkjet transfer papers will not work in laser printers and visa versa. There is also a side to print onto with the computer printer and a side that you do not want to print onto. Most transfer papers will be well marked on the back side to let you know not to print that side. Here you can see the back side of the Avery heat transfer paper for light garments. It is possible to get professional papers that may not be marked as well. But you should be able to tell the difference by feeling the paper. One side should feel rubbery or soft; this is the print side. The other side should feel pretty much just like ordinary paper; this is the back side which you do not print. Once you have this all settled, you can start to think about the printer settings.

The first thing you need to do when you print a design onto transfer paper is to reverse or mirror the image. This can be done one of 2 ways. First, you can simply do it in the graphic software you use to create the design. Or you can actually do it through the print dialogue when you go to print. Most computer printers will have a setting for transfers. It will be either called “transfer” or something of that nature. If you are unsure, consult your printer manual for details on the printer settings and functions. I prefer to do the reversal in the software before I print it. That way I can set the printer settings to reflect the quality and ink saturation I want for the transfer paper. I normally will use a setting like “Photo Paper Pro” or “Presentation Paper Matte”. Again this setting will depend on the brand printer you have but it is good enough to use the highest quality printer setting for best results. Just remember that different quality printer settings may affect the color of the design slightly too.

Once your transfer paper is printed, it is a good idea to let the transfer set for an hour. This will allow the transfer to become a little more stable to work with especially when trimming. If you use scissors to trim the edges be carful not to scrape the point of the scissors inside the design area as you cut around it. That may damage or scrape off the transfer layer of the transfer paper. Any damage or imperfections in the transfer itself will show up pretty much as they are on the shirt, just reversed. So be very careful when trimming or handling the printed transfer.

You will want to trim the paper as close to the design edges as possible. Leaving a very small white edge around the image will be fine. That “halo” will be barely visible as a ring around the design. Just keep it as small as humanly possible. You can use scissors, box knives, razors and or Exacto blades to trim the printed transfer. Now you are ready to press the transfer to the shirt using an iron or heat press.

This is where we should talk about the heat application of your transfer. The Avery inkjet heat transfers featured in the Catspit Productions YouTube videos are made for usage at home with an iron. However, the quality of your transfer depends greatly on the application. You can use an iron with these transfers but if you use a heat press the transfer quality, durability and longevity will be greatly enhanced and increased. The amount of heat and pressure that the heat press applies is far greater than that of a household iron. In fact I say that using a good working heat press with any transfer material will improve the quality of the transfer material’s performance. Thus making it look better and last longer.

I hope this helps clear up some things about the Avery inkjet heat transfers for light garments. Also remember to read the instructions on the package because some of them are hot peels while others are cold peels. Here are the links to the Avery heat transfer videos on YouTube:

New Screen Printing Video: Film Positive Tips

I finally uploaded another new screen printing video to YouTube today. This is the first video with the new intro music that I created myself with an electric guitar. Forgive me because I was just a simple rhythm player and the tune is very simple. It’s like a heavy metal rhythm Catspit style. It sounds hard and crunchy with the raw feed back and distortion coming through the background to be noticed. And this is actually the first HD video that I made with the new camera.

The video is called, “How To Screen Print: Film Positive Tips”. In this video we discuss the better uses of the different emulsions in relation to film positive quality. You can learn which emulsion to use if your film positives aren’t the greatest and which to use when they are. I am noticing that the finished HD videos are a little soft in focus compared to the original HD file. I believe this is due to the poor quality lighting in this particular video but I also think it is form the editing method I am currently using.

Therefore I will be continuing to try to figure out a way to just use Sony Vegas to make the videos. I am learning more about how to do it and I have made some progress since the last blog where I talked about this. But I still seem to have a problem when rendering the final cut. I have to check on this but I thought it was making a black video with sound when I added any effect at all. I have to try a new experiment but in the end I am worried about increasing the amount of time it takes to make a video by using Vegas.

How To Make Artwork For Screenprinting T-Shirts

As you may have guessed I get a lot of questions relating to artwork for screen printing tee shirts. I am not a graphic artist by any means but I know what I need in artwork to get my jobs printed easily and practically for my particular printing situation. Getting artwork to film can be a challenge for even me at times so when you are just starting out, it can be even more difficult. That’s why I suggest having a basic knowledge of the artwork needed for screen printing tee shirts before you attempt to create art for printing.

In order to help people get an understanding of the basic principle of screen printing art and the separate pieces of art we use to create the final printed image, I made the first screenprinting video about art some time ago. I think this is really like the 3rd video I made with myself instructing. In the video called, “How To Screen Print: Artwork” I give the simplest description of the pieces of art needed to print a 3 color design. When I made this video I intended to come back to this subject much sooner. To this day, I have not really made a new artwork video. However, this is nothing to worry about. I still have a lot of subject matter I have not covered at all or need to explain in much more detail. I do plan on making another video about artwork and in the long run I’m sure we will make more than one.

So take a look at the one and only screen printing artwork video by the Catspit YouTube channel. You can see how far we have come in video making and production value. And you can see what it was like when the whole Catspit project first started out. Make sure to stay tuned for more educational screenprinting videos from Catspit Productions, LLC. Eventually, I hope to get to as many topics as I can in the videos. I’ll keep making them as long as you all keep watching!! Thanks for reading!

New Entertainment Video: Phoenix Desert Botanical Garden

Another brand new HD video has been uploaded to YouTube. This video is an entertainment video about Arizona and the Phoenix area. I recently visited the Phoenix Desert Botanical Garden and took some video footage. I thought it would be a great addition to the Arizona page of the Catspit website. The new HD camera has been a lot of fun to work with and making this video was especially enjoyable due to the quality of the video footage I made. I really like how this one turned out. I hope I can extend new skills I learned from making this video to the making of new screen printing videos.

The new video is simply called, “Phoenix Desert Botanical Garden” and features the diverse plant life in the desert. There are shots of butterflies and even a hummingbird drinking nectar. The Botanical Garden is very beautiful and during the winter season is an especially attractive place for local residents and travelers alike. If you are ever in the area, I recommend a visit for sure. You will enjoy yourself and have some great pictures or video to bring home to the family.

Next week I will be uploading a new screen printing video also in HD format. This video will be a supplement to the “How To Screen Print: Making Film Positives At Home” video already posted. It will clear up some of the confusion I may have created in that video and explain in simple terms some of the better film making options available for making screens. Stay tuned…

Screen Printing Excitement!

I have been doing a lot of planning lately and I have come up with some new plans for the screen printing video introduction segment. Lately YouTube has been a little particular as far as giving credits for royalty free music. I even had to delete one video at one point because of some image copyright concerns. So I was thinking with the new HD camera it is time for an entirely new intro clip for the educational screenprinting videos on YouTube. Time to minimize the royalty free music.

I am in the process of creating a new intro clip with all new music. The last music was said to be a little intimidating or perhaps scary. I though it was dramatic like 2001 Space Odyssey music dramatic but I guess not…LOL. So I have decided to create an original rhythm myself with an electric guitar. Yes, once upon a time I played in a high school and college band but today I just fiddle around for fun and entertainment. I’m going to create a simple heavy metal rhythm to use as the intro clip music and it will be performed and recorded by myself. Getting into making the videos with such personal creativity got me to thinking about the new shop location.

I am getting really excited to custom build a studio type shop designed for making videos, training and finally screen printing jobs. I figure now that I will have total control of my shop environment, I will set it up with good video lighting and have a chance to get better audio by keeping things isolated. I am anxious to build my ideal video making and screen printing studio with total control over the end results. Before I was limited to do what I was allowed to do in the cooperative warehouse I was working in. I feel now that the freedoms of having a private space will be very good for me and my screen printing endeavors online or off.

Things are going very well online and I am excited to be offering more services and supplies on my website as well as equipment. I enjoy screenprinting a lot but I have been really having a good time helping others out while doing business with them. It is a very rewarding feeling to help someone out a great deal when you are conducting business. And in fact that is my entire business premise. By helping people out with training and information, I open many doors of opportunity for my customer and myself. That to me is good business. When both sides of the equation benefit and grow.

I can’t wait to get started making some really cool new screen printing videos. Stay tuned for the new intro clip! Thanks for reading! Learn how to screen print with Catspit Productions, LLC!
