New Screenprinting Video: 1 Color Print On An M&R Automatic Press

Another long awaited educational video about screen printing tee shirts has been uploaded to YouTube. This is a cool video because I get to show you all a 1 color print on an M&R Diamondback press. This is a 7 color automatic textile screenprinting press. It has 7 heads with one head occupied by an infrared flash cure unit. The flash cure is not mounted into the head at the moment so you could feasibly print 7 colors wet. Who want really wants to do that though…. LOL.

The new video is called, “How To Screen Print: 1 Color On Automatic Press”. In the video I set up a simple 1 color design with black ink to print on a white test shirt. You get to see the press, the set up at the print head and the printing movements of the print head. It is a very brief summary and I hope to get back to this press later to do a video about the press and its functions. This video doesn’t get to explain all of the detail in the set up of the print head for an actual job. But that is for another time.

So if you are interested in screen printing tee shirts for fun or for profit, this would be a great video for you to watch. You’ll get a good idea of what it might be like to work with an automatic screenprinting press. One thing is for certain. Automatic screen printing is much different than manual printing. And it’s a lot easier on your shoulders or wrists.

Screen Printing Exposure Units: Point Source Vs. Multiple Bulb

I am often asked what type of light source to use when making screens for screen printing. There are so many different commercial choices and when it comes to home or hobby screen printing, there are even more. But the right light source for your particular situation will help you make a good stencil easier than with the wrong light source. It is possible to make working stencils with many scenarios and knowing about emulsion is the first step.

Always remember that direct photographic emulsions for screenprinting are sensitive to UV light only. That means in order to get a good exposure you light source should have a high UV output. When working at home with standard tungsten bulb work lamps, it is a common mistake to use too low of a wattage. A 1000 watt work lamp will give you much better results than a 500 watt. I wouldn’t suggest using anything lower than that for a single bulb tungsten set up. These work lamps also come with a glass cover or “lens”. This should be removed as they often have a UV filter coating which will remove the UV light from the light sent through the glass. You can use them bare bulb style.

The tungsten work lamps will often have a longer exposure time depending on what type of emulsion you are using but they are a true point source light source which has a few benefits of its own. Most importantly it will be better with getting detail out on the stencil. A point source or single bulb exposure unit will produce greater detail easier than a multiple bulb light source. The down side is these types of lamps produce heat. The professional units which use metal halide bulbs with much higher wattage have shutters and cooling fans to prevent the bulb from overheating and to protect the emulsion coated screen from excessive heat. The quality of the light differs for these two types of exposure units as well. Metal halide units will penetrate the emulsion layer on the screen much better than any other unit and reduce or eliminate any “scum” or filming commonly associated with some light sources due to under exposure on the ink well side. A metal halide unit will also require very dense film positives.

Multiple bulb units with fluorescent industrial black lamps run very cool and output a good amount of UV light. They often will reduce your exposure time compared to a standard tungsten unit and the professional machines tend to be much less expensive than metal halide units. The fluorescent industrial black lamp exposure unit is a logical upgrade or first exposure unit when starting a screen printing business. The down side is that this type of machine will be problematic in producing detail. These bulbs will demand much better film quality to work with longer exposure times for fine detail or line work. It is very common for multiple fluorescent bulb exposure units to leave the ink well side of the emulsion coated screen slightly under exposed. That is the cause of filming or the clear “scum” that clogs the stencil when the screen dries. But this can easily be delt with by blowing out the water left in the mesh after washout with low pressure air.

In the end I would say if you have the money, get yourself a metal halide exposure unit. If you have only some money get a multiple bulb unit with fluorescent industrial black lamps. If you have no money you can get a 1000 watt work lamp and remove the glass. That’s my order of preference. At this point in my shop I have a multiple bulb unit with fluorescent industrial black lamps. It works very well but I always make sure to have very dense film positives.

Screen Printing: Take Control of Your Stencil for Printing 4 Color Process With UV Ink

If you are looking for technical tips and instructions on getting an excellent stencil for screen printing with UV inks then you should have a look at this great article by Ross Balfour of SaatiPrint. This is an older article but it has a lot of information packed into it from one of the leading screenprinting chemical manufactures in the industry. This article is very technical but it also has a decent amount of information that is easily read and understood by anyone with good reading comprehension.

SaatiPrintCheck out this excerpt from the article: “The complexities of screenprinting four color process are further complicated when using UV cured ink, by extra demanding requirements in controlling ink deposit. It’s not enough to have to deal with the relationship of dots per inch with mesh count, or carefully selecting the angle of dots on each separation so you avoid not only mesh/dot moiré, but even dot to dot moiré between the overlaid colors. Now you also have to avoid the problems that can occur from printing halftones with an excessive ink deposit. Problems will occur when printing third and fourth colors if ink transfer from the screen to the substrate is severely affected by excessive ink deposit from the first two colors down. This is due to the high solids/low shrinkage characteristics of UV cured inks…. The basis of this presentation then is to outline the properties of mesh/stencil combinations which are most suitable, and identify the variables which need to be controlled in order to successfully print four color process with UV cured ink.”

How To Screen Print: Getting Your Art To Screen

Have you ever wondered how the image to be screen printed onto a tee shirt gets onto the screen as a stencil? In this educational screenprinting video I did some time ago you can learn all about how the stencil is created for printing garments. This is the video that introduces the exposure unit to the line up of equipment videos on YouTube. It’s another one of those early videos in which you can see my inexperience in video making and still a bit of camera shyness.

The video is called, “How To Screen Print: Getting Your Art To Screen”. In the video I explain the usage and parts of a standard multiple bulb exposure unit with industrial black lamps. This unit puts out a decent amount of UV light which cures emulsion well but it is a multiple bulb light source which can cause some minor issues with critical print work. If you don’t know how to deal with them, you could experience a difficult time. A point source exposure unit like ones with metal halide bulbs are the best. They burn images without any of the problems associated with multiple bulb units and the quality of the UV light source is so good that it will drastically reduce or eliminate any underexposure on the inkwell side of the screen. That gets rid of filming or scum problems after washout.

So if you want to learn about the basic principles of getting the artwork for screen printing onto an actual screen, check out this tutorial video. It may not have all the production value of other screen printing videos on YouTube but it will certainly instruct you well as it is pretty easy to understand. And if you need to fill in some of the blanks for how the entire process works, see this video; How To Screen Print: The Process Explained.

New Screen Printing Video: Exposing Screens Without Film

Hello everyone and happy Friday to you all. I hope you are ready for another new screen printing video because I know I am! I uploaded a new video to the Catspit  YouTube  channel. This video was made in 2010 with the new HD camera. It was one of the first videos I made with it at the SGIA show in Las Vegas. And as you know from the last blog entry, I am finally making true HD videos from the original HD camera files and Sony Vegas. I am very excited about the new quality of the Catspit educational screen printing videos.

This video is called, “Screenprinting: Exposing Screens Without Film”. The video shows a complete demonstration of the new Saati direct to screen imaging system. This is a system designed to eliminate film positives by printing the film image directly onto the emulsion coated screen with a water based dye. The demo includes the printing of the image onto the screen, the exposure and the washout. You get to see the finished printed dye image on an actual emulsion coated screen, how it is exposed and how the water based dye actually aides the washout process too. That’s right! It’s the real deal all the way to the final product with a couple of trade show improvises of course.

Make sure to stop by the website or the YouTube channel to have a look at this great new screenprinting video. It’s fun to watch and educational! LOL… no really, it is. I hope you all enjoy this video as much as I did making it. If I had it my way, I would upload a new video every week or even more. But there is a logic and a priority scale associated with my uploads and normal work. So stay tuned for the next screen printing video which should be in about 2 weeks.

Screen Printing: In Pursuit of the Perfect Stencil

If you are looking for technical tips and instructions on getting a perfect stencil for screen printing, then you should have a look at this great article by Ross Balfour of SaatiPrint. This is an older article from 2007 but it has a lot of information packed into it from one of the leading screenprinting chemical manufactures in the industry. This article is very technical but it also has a decent amount of information that is easily read and understood by anyone with good reading comprehension.

SaatiPrintCheck out this excerpt from the article: “A screen printing stencil has to perform four functions. Two are important for any type of screen printing, since the stencil must first reproduce the image that is to be printed and be resistant to abrasion and chemical attack. The last two functions are particularly important for high-quality line or halftone printing, because the stencil can help to control the amount of ink that is printed. The stencil is also responsible for controlling image acutance, more commonly referred to as print edge definition. Clearly, the stencil plays a critical role in the overall success of a screen printing job. This article will review the variables associated with stencils and describe how to minimize them and remedy the harmful effects they may impart to your work.”

The article is called, “In Pursuit of the Perfect Stencil”. The article is located HERE.

Screen Printing Educational Video Update!

Hello everyone, I am dropping by for a quick note to let you all know what I am up to lately. First off, I have made another great revelation with Sony Vegas and from here on in my screen printing videos will be full, true HD with all the bells and whistles of that rich format. I finally figured out that Vegas has glitch with my computer. I am running Vista on a pretty fast laptop to process my videos with Vegas while I work on questions and comments on my desktop. Maybe it’s Vista but there seems to be a problem when I run Vegas for a long time and do editing. If I render the video without restarting Vegas first, it renders rubbish. So now all I have to do is save my Vegas project, restart Vegas and then render the final product. Oh boy… what a pain it was for me to realize this.

Sony Handycam XR350v

The next and most important revelation with my computer and Vegas was that I thought maybe this is why I had trouble with the HD video file created by the Sony camera. I think what happened was I tried to render a camera HD file which is like an M2TS file which also has 2 other accompanying files. I have no idea what those files do but when I was doing this I must have had Vegas open for some time doing editing and playing around. Thus when I went to render, it did not work. Which then threw me off because it made me think I had to convert the HD camera files to Windows format. But now I have discovered that Vegas does indeed read the Sony HD camera files and can work with them perfectly producing a true HD video that not only has the file characteristics but the video quality to back it up.

So now that I have that all worked out to the point that I can really edit and render a high quality HD video, I will be able to produce much better HD videos for YouTube. Now it is obvious to me that I need to work on lighting. That is difficult when I change the area in which I make videos so often. Therefore I will need to introduce some type of portable lighting. Get ready for the next video which will be an SGIA show video from Saati. This is a great demonstration of the direct to screen system complete with a screen being made. And yes, it is in full HD format made form the original camera files! Yes!!

Screen Printing: Where To Find Products To Print

I can’t remember if I ever wrote a blog about this topic but if I did, It’s time for another one. Because of the YouTube channel and website I am often asked where I get the products I print whether it be tee shirts or other printable items. I must get asked this question at least 4 to 5 times each week. I may be able to help out with how to screen print or where to get your equipment and supplies but when it comes to sourcing products, it’s all you baby!

Just think about it for a moment and try to imagine what would happen to my business if I shared my personal product sources with the entire internet. Fist off my customers would probably get wind of this and soon learn about how much I pay for the products I sell them. Secondly giving my personal sources out to anyone and everyone weakens the value of the product source for me as a screen printer and a business. This would mean that the products I research and source will be available to anyone without even doing a Google search. This really does not make any sense at all in a business aspect not to mention I would be working on building my vendors businesses without so much as a thank you. Therefore it is my personal policy not to divulge sources for products that I print here in my own shop. I’ll tell you where to get anything you need to screen print but I cannot tell you where to get items to print.

Many of my sources are local to my area and as a general rule of thumb it is a good idea to source products as close to you as possible. This will minimize the cost of the product by eliminating or reducing shipping charges. Shipping fees can be a big problem for printers as it can raise the price of a printed product substantially. So whenever possible, find a product dealer in your neighborhood or at the very least find the closest one to you. The internet is a very powerful tool and if you combine it with the telephone, you should be able to find what you need with a little research.

I can help out with Equipment Sales or Print Supplies. I’ll even go out of my way to help you find the tools and supplies you need to screen print whether or not I get anything out of it. And I am more than happy to teach you as much as I can about how to screen print different items. But I have to keep some things to myself. I already have enough screen printers out there who dislike me for what I am doing now….LOL.
