New Screenprinting Video: Screen Drying Box & Stretcher

Another brand new educational video about screen printing has been uploaded to YouTube today. It was a challenge to get this done as I have been so busy with moving myself and getting ready to make new videos in the new Catspit shop. Normally I would do this blog right after I posted the latest video along with a Twitter and Facebook post. But today I had other things to tend to immediately following he upload so here I am late at night trying to finish the days tasks… hang in there guys, I’ll be back on schedule very soon.

So today’s video is another great show video in the Saati booth. This is from the Vegas SGIA show in 2010. It was a very fun show to go to because I went with some colleagues and I really love Vegas. I’m not a gambler but I like to play a couple of games and take in the sights, smells, sounds, etc. Vegas is the touristy type of place that makes you feel like you are farther away from home than you really are. At least for me because I live like 5 hours away by car. The new video is called, “Screenprinting: Screen Dryer Box & Pneumatic Stretcher”. In this video you get a look at a real professional screen dying box rather than a makeshift one like the unit I made. And you get to see a pneumatic screen stretcher. Unfortunately the screen stretcher wasn’t in operation but you get to see the set up and such. This is a shorter video but I thought you all would appreciate seeing the equipment.

This is the last show video in stock and I will make some more sometime in the future perhaps. I will definitely be going to the RANAR factory and I hope to visit the Saati lab sometime as well. I think I may have done as much as I want at the trade shows for now. We shall see… Thanks for reading! Learn how to screen print with Catspit Productions, LLC!

The New Screen Printing Shop & A New Catspit Video Era

I have done a lot of work to get to where I am today with the Catspit shop. There have been a lot of trials and tribulations along the way including a failed cooperative effort and personal factors which have led me to where I am today. But in the end I think it turned out quite well considering the new responsibilities and duties I have in caring for my aging Mother. That’s right,  Mom is a big part of the reason my brother and I did not open a storefront right now. So it’s time to begin to welcome you all to the new screen printing shop and the new RANAR equipment. I am very excited to be working with RANAR to bring you their product line. I believe in their products and that’s why I use them myself.

I have finally gotten power to the belt dryer and flash cure unit and we have all new equipment to work with and make videos about. There is the new upgraded Vista 6/6 tee shirt press and of course the new Curestar 4000 belt dryer with an all new control panel. Then we have the larger exposure unit which can do 23 x 31 screens for automatic presses. And last but not least there is a 16 x 18 flash cure unit and a galvanized metal washout booth. Oh yea, I almost forgot the adjustable screen rack too. The shop is coming together and I am just about to make some new videos. I’ll be doing new videos on each of the new pieces of equipment very soon. But first there will be a transitional video which will cover and discuss the upgradability of the RANAR Vista Series screenprinting presses. This is one of the reasons I recommend their products for beginners and start up professionals alike. Durability, versatility, and value are all a part of the reasons why I would and do print with this press myself.

I have one more show video to upload before we get to some new videos from the new shop. But I have to get a hair cut before I start making videos again, lol. I really was busy for a while there and I’m still negotiating a move for myself now too. I can’t wait to get going and really be able to make videos whenever I feel like it about more great screen printing topics. I hope to cover as much material as I logically can for you all to enjoy and learn from. So stay tuned to the website, YouTube channel and this blog for all the latest and greatest from Catspit Productions, LLC!

New Screenprinting Video: Automatic Presses In Action

I have been very busy finishing the new shop and printing some jobs that were backed up. I have finally finished the shop and it is fully operational. And this evening I was able to upload a screen printing video to YouTube that I had been trying to post since last week. Now that the videos are truly HD, they take a little more time to upload. And I like to make sure I am there when the upload is complete to check and set all the settings on the video itself. It’s actually a lot of work to post a video when you consider all the other tasks that are done with it.

This weeks new screenprinting educational video is called, “Automatic Screen Printing: M&R Presses In Action”.  This is one of the best show videos displaying the automatic presses in action. One press is actually printing a skull all over a tee shirt on an oversized screen and pallet. Then there is a very large automatic graphic press which is amazing. And you get to see one of the largest carousel presses cycling through some motions.

I figured it was a good time to post this video as I just uploaded some videos featuring an M&R Diamondback. I think I have another show video to upload before we get to the newest videos from the new shop set up. I have a few more things to do before we start shooting new videos there. But don’t hold your breath, you only have one more video to wait.

Thanks again to everyone for their support and attention. I appreciate it all. Thanks for reading! Learn how to screen print with Catspit Productions, LLC!

Screen Printing: What To Expect From Your Stencil

If you are looking for technical tips and instructions about commercial stencil types, the technology of stencils and their limitations then you should have a look at this great article by Ross Balfour of SaatiPrint. This is an older article but it has a lot of information packed into it from one of the leading screenprinting chemical and mesh manufactures in the industry. This article is very technical but it also has a decent amount of information that is easily read and understood by anyone with good reading comprehension.

SaatiPrintCheck out this excerpt from the article: “The purpose of this presentation is to give an outline of commercially available stencil systems and the properties they possess. In doing so, we will touch upon the various technology employed, the effect of processing variables, and finally examine the effect of some of the factors that limit what is achievable. Commercially available photostencils fall into four main categories. The first is known as Indirect Film, where the stencil imaging and developing process is carried out independently of the screenmesh. The finished stencil is applied to the mesh with gentle pressure, blotted with newsprint, and dried prior to removal of the backing film.”

The article is called, “What To Expect From Your Stencil”. The article is located HERE.

This is the fourth of five articles provided by SaatiPrint for the Catspit website. These articles appear on the Article Archive section of the Catspit website. These articles appear on the Catspit website courtesy of Saati and have been published previously. © SaatiPrint. Please make sure to visit the Print Supplies page to view the products offered by Saatchem.

I hope you all enjoy this new addition to the Catspit website. I hope to continue to work with Saati in the future to bring you more educational materials about screen printing tee shirts and other products. Houston, The Screenprinting Eagle Has Landed!

The day has finally come. The new screen printing equipment from RANAR has arrived. It came in late yesterday and I immediately began to unpack and sort the boxes and parts. There were 3 pallets containing all of the parts for the press, dryer, flash cure, exposure unit, washout booth and screen rack. At fist I felt overwhelmed with all the work ahead of me to put everything together. But as I began to sort things out and assemble the dryer, I found that it was not that bad at all.

The press comes almost completely assembled. I have to attach the pallets and pallet arms but other than that, it is ready to go off the truck. Very nice. I like that the print heads and both pallet and head carousels are assembled to specs at RANAR. Although this unit is upgradable which would make it easy to assemble or upgrade I believe. It was supposed to come in as a 6/1 with the 6 station upgrade so that I could do a video about the upgrade. However, it came in as a 6/6 all ready for the pallets. I will still do a video about the Vista Series press and it’s awesome ability to be upgraded.

The belt dryer was very easy to assemble but you would be well advised to have someone there to help you lift the oven onto the deck. I did this alone using my brains to figure a way to get it up there by myself. Fortunately, I was able to figure this out and get the oven onto the deck without a hitch. The instructions for the assembly of the oven were a bit vague and I was lucky that I had worked with this dryer before. It’s easy to figure out but if you don’t pay attention you could assemble the deck plate and the oven top in the wrong position. If you take it slow and look before you start bolting, you will be just fine. But all in all it was a piece of cake.

The exposure unit is completely assembled in the box. It seems all I have to do is attach the legs. That’s great news. The washout booth is a different story. That will require the most assembly. But I think that is typical of this type of thing. It has to be broken down for shipping purposes otherwise it would be too big. But again I think this will be pretty simple. The basin is one part and the legs and booth panels are attached to the basin. That is the same for most washout booths that can ship by UPS or even freight. Now the screen rack was surprisingly heavy. I have not opened this box totally yet but I think it is heavy because RANAR makes a great screen rack. It is adjustable to fit 20×24 manual screens or 23×31 automatic frames. That is very cool because the racks that claim to fit both without adjusting really do not fit the 23×31 screens so well. But the RANAR rack will fit them both like a glove.

So let’s give a shout out to Francisco and David from RANAR. They were extremely helpful in putting this deal together and their customer service is excellent. Remember, if you are looking into buying manual screen printing equipment, please check out RANAR and give me a call. I am a dealer for the entire line of  RANAR products. And just think how unique of a salesman I am. Not only do I sell the product but I buy it and use it myself. That’s how much I believe in the RANAR products I sell. And to me the most important tactic in my sales strategy is to teach you about what you are getting into, then I will help you buy equipment. That may not be the best thing for selling high volume but in the end I can sleep very well at night. I am not here to take advantage of anyone. I am here to help.

New Screen Printing Video: The Automatic Press

Once again I have uploaded an educational screenprinting video to the YouTube channel. I am starting to release a new video once a week or so now that we are getting closer to having the new Catspit shop all set up and running. I am happy to be able to bring you some new videos on automatic printing. I have done two videos recently which featured the M&R Diamondback press. Today’s new video is one of them.

The video is called, “How To Screen Print: The Automatic Press”. This is a very cool press overview. In the video I discuss and describe some of the functions and controls of the automatic screen printing press. This is a great video to watch if you were ever interested in how tee shirts get produced commercially on a mass level. This is the type of press that might print the many embellished garments you see at the mall. Of course the Diamondback is an entry level automatic press. In the video you even get to see a bit of the display screen and menus.

How To Create Art For Screen Printing Tee Shirts

Many people ask me what type of software I use for creating artwork for screen printing tee shirts. I am not a graphic arts expert by any means and I don’t even know enough to teach anyone how to really go about it but what I can tell you is what you would want for screen printing. The first thing to know about artwork for screen printing is that most often it is in vector format. This is because vector format will allow the printer to manipulate the art without any loss of detail in any respect. It also allows easy modification of parts of the image. Therefore we look for vector art or EPS files for making screenprinting artwork.

I use a combination of Illustrator, Corel Draw and sometimes Photoshop to make or modify my screen print artwork. Photoshop will be the least useful in that it does not handle vector art. But you can use Photoshop or other photo editing programs to do a few things to items that may then be imported into vector software and converted or “traced” to vector format. The lower the quality of the original image file, the lower the quality the vector conversion will be. I find this function to work better on Corel than Illustrator but it will not be able to recreate very high quality vector conversions. For that you should use a professional service or artist.

Vector software and other photo editing programs can be expensive to buy on a professional level. There may be some educational versions of software available for students but in the end a fully functional version of Illustrator or Corel will cost you. There are some free software downloads that offer vector and photo editing software but you have to check them out and see which ones will work best for you and your computer.

Illustrator and Corel Draw both handle vector file formats such as EPS, PDF, and their own file format. But Corel seems to have an advantage in that it can open Illustrator files as well. It seems to open most version’s file formats if not all. I favor Corel for certain art jobs and Illustrator for others. I like them both but I would say Corel would be easier to learn for a beginner.

If you are new to screen printing and are heavily using Photoshop, I would recommend getting familiar with a vector art program. It may take longer to understand or generate art in the beginning but in the long run you will be happy you did. Vector art and clip art go hand in hand with custom screen printing. New Screenprinting Video: 3 Colors On A White Under Base

Finally another release of a new screen printing video from Catspit Productions. This is the last video that was made in the old Catspit cooperative printing shop. I made this video some time ago when it was much cooler than it is now. And as we move forward into the warmer months of summer I am getting ready to build a new shop. This shop will be much different than the old one. I will have total control this time around and even though the space will be smaller, it will be set up much better. I am very excited to be working with RANAR to equip the shop with new screenprinting equipment. I really have grown to love the RANAR product because it is so well made, affordable and versatile.

So this is the last video where we will be printing on the 6 color, 1 station press. The new video is called, “How To Screen Print: 3 Colors On A White Under Base”. In this educational video I demonstrate a 3 color print on a black tee with a white under base. In it you get to see the white under base printed with the colors on top. You also get to see the film positives, screens and the original shirt the art was created from. This video is a great example of why you would want a 6/6 fully rotary press rather than a 1 station for production of high volume or multi colored prints. In an upcoming video I will show the upgrade of the 6 color, 1 station press to a 6/6. That’s what’s so cool about the RANAR Vista Series. You can buy it as a 4 or 6 color and 1 station. Then when you want, you can get the upgrade it to make the press a 6/4 or a 6/6. Very cool!

So make sure to stop by the YouTube channel and have a look at the latest tutorial video about screen printing. I think this one will be a lot of fun for everyone to watch because it further helps explain how the printing process works. Thanks for reading! How To Screenprint: Prepping And Coating Screens

And here we are taking a look back at another old screen printing educational video by Catspit Productions. This is a favorite of mine because during the time that I made this video I was really still winging every aspect of the video making process form the subject to the actual demo in the video. These are the days I would be in the shop and have a moment to spare for video making. But I would do everything very spontaneously. Even the subject matter and demo in the video was based on what I was doing in the shop that day. On this day, I happened to be coating several screens for upcoming jobs and I decided to turn it into a video for YouTube.

Today I actually plan out my videos beforehand even though they are still not scripted. I like to do this because it really allows me to create a more effective educational video while packing in as much information as I can. But in the video called, “How To Screen Print: Prepping And Coating Screens”, you can totally see how improvised these videos were at the time. Here I set up a mock screen coating area in the middle of the shop in broad daylight. I had no way of including my YouTube audience in the actual screen coating set up that I used at the time due to limitations in lighting and warehouse space. I am very excited now because we are on the verge of building a completely new shop for printing and making videos but this time around I will have complete control of the environment and how or what may be done for a video.

When I watch this video I always laugh at the part where I almost drop the screen while I am coating it. Oh yea and the part where I get distracted by making the video and I don’t let the emulsion settle back into the scoop coater before pulling away from the screen. What a messy thing to do. I hate when I do that! But overall I think these minor mishaps actually add to the value of the educational video. Many people have commented how they are appreciative and impressed that I did not edit those parts out of the video. They often feel that it adds to the information being relayed in the video. It gives a sense of realness or makes you feel that your getting an inside look at the process complete with things that can go wrong.

This is one of those videos that I think I will remake when the new shop is up and running. I’d like to do this one over properly and show you more of how I actually do it in my own shop when I have several screens to coat at once. So stay tuned to the YouTube channel for more great screenprinting educational videos and expansions of existing videos.

Screen Printing: Fixing in on Mesh To Frame Attachment

If you are looking for technical tips and instructions about mesh to frame adhesion in relation to stretching screens then you should have a look at this great article by Eric Klein of SaatiPrint. This is an older article but it has a lot of information packed into it from one of the leading screenprinting chemical and mesh manufactures in the industry. This article is very technical but it also has a decent amount of information that is easily read and understood by anyone with good reading comprehension.

SaatiPrintCheck out this excerpt from the article: “Screen printers face as many options in screen making as there are opinions about which frame types and mesh attachment methods are best. Here, I’ll cover the most popular frames systems and procedures for affixing screen mesh to the frames, considering the benefits and drawbacks of each. I’ll also explore how the specific fabric selected can influence the effectiveness of different screen making components and methods.”
