Have you ever wondered how the image to be screen printed onto a tee shirt gets onto the screen as a stencil? In this educational screenprinting video I did some time ago you can learn all about how the stencil is created for printing garments. This is the video that introduces the exposure unit to the line up of equipment videos on YouTube. It’s another one of those early videos in which you can see my inexperience in video making and still a bit of camera shyness.
The video is called, “How To Screen Print: Getting Your Art To Screen”. In the video I explain the usage and parts of a standard multiple bulb exposure unit with industrial black lamps. This unit puts out a decent amount of UV light which cures emulsion well but it is a multiple bulb light source which can cause some minor issues with critical print work. If you don’t know how to deal with them, you could experience a difficult time. A point source exposure unit like ones with metal halide bulbs are the best. They burn images without any of the problems associated with multiple bulb units and the quality of the UV light source is so good that it will drastically reduce or eliminate any underexposure on the inkwell side of the screen. That gets rid of filming or scum problems after washout.
So if you want to learn about the basic principles of getting the artwork for screen printing onto an actual screen, check out this tutorial video. It may not have all the production value of other screen printing videos on YouTube but it will certainly instruct you well as it is pretty easy to understand. And if you need to fill in some of the blanks for how the entire process works, see this video; How To Screen Print: The Process Explained.
