Screen Printing T Shirts On A Manual Rotary Textile Press

This is the latest upload to YouTube and a great action video about screen printing tee shirts on a manual rotary textile press. I had a job recently where I was able to make a video of me printing the actual job. I don’t do this often because quite frankly it’s hard to do without messing up some tee shirts. But this was a pretty simple job and I was just starting things up and getting the pallets warm as I was flashing a 3 color on white. Originally I intending on printing this wet but I screwed up my artwork and film positives so some of the black printer was over printing the blue and had to flash. I didn’t notice until after the screens were made and on press… LOL. Turns out I think it looked a lot better anyway due to the inks I was using. I would have had to add reducer to each to lesson pick up for printing wet. But what they hey, the job came out great and the customer was happy so in the end that’s all that counts.

Well that and you have to make some money right? LOL…. the new video is called, “Screen Printing T Shirts On A Manual Rotary Textile Press.” This is a totally cool fast motion video showing the printing of a 3 color design on white tee shirts. I don’t talk because it’s sped up and therefore it really isn’t an instructional video but if you watch me closely you can see how the press is rotated with a flash during the printing of a 3 color design. This is an excellent screenprinting demonstration for anyone wondering how a rotary textile press works and why the pallets rotate the shirts around the press. It’s an example of why having a fully rotary press is ideal when flashing a multi color screen print. It makes a good companion video to the article about how to use a rotary press on the website. It’s even pretty cool for me to watch for some reason. It seems to have a hypnotizing effect on me. Maybe because i do that sort of thing often watching a video of me doing it puts me into a pseudo printing trance. i don’t know but I like this video and I think you will too. It’s another killer Catspit Production, hehe….

Thanks again for dropping by my little blog and reading my post. i can’t tell you how much I appreciate your time and attention. Thanks for your support! Learn how to screen print with Catspit Productions, LLC!

Screen Printer’s Trick: Make Cheap DIY Paper Stickers

I just finished a pretty decent order of 500 pieces last week and I wanted to label my boxes with a Catspit sticker for some free advertising. Tee shirt boxes are often used over and over for shirts as well as being reused for other purposes. So there are a few times a year that I want to actually label my boxes on certain jobs where I feel it is appropriate. This time I had 5 boxes to label so I thought I would share my technique with you all being as though it seems like it would be perfect for some YouTube users who make handmade graffiti stickers. Since I don’t do this often and I do use rather large labels, I use a method that is cheap, fast and looks great.

This video is called, “Screen Printer’s Trick: Make Cheap DIY Paper Stickers.” It’s a really fun video in which I show you how to make a sticker out of any paper. You can use paper computer print outs, hand drawings or existing printed images like post cards and photos. In this video I take a full color print out from a laser printer and cut it out in order to make a paper sticker using a spray mount much like the spray tacks we use in screen printing tee shirts. In fact this whole techniques started with spray tacks and fooling around the shop. We all know how when it gets slow in the print shop we often start using our creative juices in adventurous ways. How many of us have put pizza or other food through the belt dryer? How many of us start playing with scrap pieces of magnetic sign material only to make a few unique magnets? Who doesn’t experiment with printing in strange locations or with ink colors we never use for actual print jobs? And who hasn’t played with the spray tack to make various items stick around the shop? Well that’s where this idea started some many years ago in my brother’s shop in New York. We used to use the spray tack to glue down all kinds of sh*t in his place…LOL. Repairs, signage, floor mats and more.

Maybe I should brand some spray tack as a generic household adhesive and do an infomercial on the stuff. It has all kinds if uses around the house! The garage! The office! Order your can of Catspit’s Super Stick It All today!! LOL… anyway this should be at the very least a fun video for you all to watch. Thanks again for stopping by my blog and checking out my posts. Screen Printing Classes, Training & Education At RANAR by Catspit

Did you know that Jonathan at Catspit Productions teaches classes, gives demonstrations and gives personal training in your shop or home? Well now you do because I made a new video about the first class I held at RANAR this year. When I went to the ISS screen printing trade show in Long Beach California, I also taught a small class immediately following the show. It’s often the next business day after the shows at Long Beach Convention Center that I will personally instruct an introductory class about how to screen print tee shirts. I have to say it was a lot of fun and I hope to do more classes in the future. So I thought I would make this video and try to spread the word about it.

The video is called, “Screen Printing Classes, Training & Education At RANAR by Catspit”. In the video I basically explain everything I stated above but you also get to see a few clips from the last class I taught. It’s actually a pretty cool video because you get to see me print a four color spot and dot print job. It’s a design I set up in order to do some Catspit videos with halftones and spot colors combined. I’ll be doing a set up video on that very soon and then we will take a look at how to properly utilize a manual rotary press with a flash station using the same artwork. I guess you could say this video is a sneak peak at videos to come. I also have a webpage set up on the Catspit website for the Classes & Training page here:

http://catspitproductionsllc.com/screenprintingclasses.aspx

You can always stop by that page to see if there is a class currently scheduled. These are great classes because it’s not a corporate environment focusing on sales at all. I myself make some revenue by teaching the class so there is no pressure for equipment sales whatsoever by RANAR. Secondly if you do buy equipment we put your class fee toward the purchase of qualifying equipment. So if you come for a class and buy a floor press the class will end up being free. If you don’t buy any equipment no one will harass you to do so… LOL and you will get some very intense one on one time with myself and the owners of RANAR who also have great knowledge of screenprinting equipment to share with you freely.

I began offering this class because I enjoy teaching and I hope to expand the classes some day. I hope to see you there one day… Thanks a lot for stopping by the blog and reading my usual drivel on my usual subjects. Or subject…. 🙂 Learn how to screen print with Catspit Productions, LLC!

Guest Post: The Perfect Frame Adhesive By RhinoTech

Basically, every screen maker/screen printer needs a great frame adhesive. So…we’ve gleaned information from RhinoTech regarding screen printing frame adhesives that have proven to work  flawlessly. In Part 1, we’ll lay out the specifics of RhinoMite that is a two-part adhesive. We recommend this product from our own research with our screen frames (of all types) that will leave you with no doubts about its performance. And this is important for you as a screen printer/screen maker because we want you to have an adhesive that WORKS, is highly affordable and has a much longer pot life than any other on the market today – we know, we’ve tried them.

Being profiled today is Frame Adhesive # 1: RhinoMite and its characteristics that are:

Durability – the adhesive creates a permanent bond when bonding mesh to frame; it is abrasion resistant and stands up under wear and tear during the daily reclaiming of a screen for reuse (using chemical screen and press wash). RhinoMite can be removed with a frame adhesive remover like ARP 2600.

Flexibility  – designed so that during use under squeegee pressure, the frame adhesive  won’t release from the frame.  And this characteristic is important to ensure its long lasting durability.

The Minimal or Low Odor Factor – what can we say about this other than it is important that a screen maker NOT be overwhelmed with an odor-producing product, so viola! RhinoMite has a very low odor.

Red or Clear Color – RhinoMite is available in either color at the prerogative of screen printer who either wants to see the adhesive as it is applied on the frame or not.

Long Pot Life – this is especially critical and, unlike other products that have a short 1 – 3 hour pot life, RhinoMite Frame Adhesive can be used up to 5 days after catalyzed when properly sealed in an air tight container.  Screen printers get the benefits of a product easy to work with over a period of time with less waste of adhesive, money and time. This is not available in other non-RhinoTech products.

Variety of Viscosities – this is important when a screen maker is using many different grades of mesh counts. Because RhinoMite Frame Adhesive is available in 15, 17 and 19% solids content,  the thinner the adhesive the easier it is to penetrate through the weave of high mesh counts (305 and higher) to enable a thorough, superior bond to frame.

Part 2 of our Frame Adhesive story continues with RhinoBond that is an Instant Screen Frame Adhesive available in a Variety of Grades. The grades include:      1) Performance – that is the highest grade of frame adhesive on the market today. It is used to bond mesh to screen when stretching at a very high tension of 40 Newtons +;  2) Economy – this a cost saving frame adhesive  that also has bonding power of up to 30+ Newtons. Use this product when performance grade tensile strength isn’t paramount; 3) Toughened – this is the most widely-used grade of frame adhesive used. It has been designed specifically for the textile industry when screens are being stretched at approximately 25 Newtons.  This product also has greater flexibility than the Economy and Performance grades.

Additional characteristics of RhinoBond:

Cures at the Speed of Light – when the frame adhesive has been applied to mesh and frame and then sprayed with an aerosol or pump spray activator (primer), RBP 1500, the adhesive will cure within 10-30 seconds dependent on the grade of product used (Performance, Economy, Toughened). The frame can be used immediately.

Durability – the adhesive creates a permanent bond when bonding mesh to frame; it is abrasion resistant and stands up under wear and tear during the daily reclaiming of a screen for reuse (using chemical screen and press wash). RhinoBond can be removed with a frame adhesive remover like ARP 2600.

The Minimal or Low Odor Factor – what can we say about this other than it is important that a screen maker NOT be overwhelmed with an odor-producing product, so viola! RhinoBond has a very low odor.

Multiple Viscosities – RhinoBond is available in a range of viscosities from  thin to  thick viscosities. For example the lower the product number (RBA5) the thinner it is and the easier it is to penetrate through high mesh counts.  The higher the product number (RBA900) the thicker the product and   the easier it is to penetrate low mesh counts (25-85) as the frame adhesive will fill the open areas between the threads to offer a secure bond.

For screen makers who don’t inventory multiple viscosities, the most versatile and widely-used product on the market available today is a 100 cPs (viscosity) product offered by RhinoTech. This is a middle of the road screen printing frame adhesive that works on most commonly used mesh counts, 110-260, in the textile screen printing industry.

How To Screen Print T Shirts Using Hand Cut Paper Stencils

It’s been getting a little out of control over here with the screen printing videos for YouTube. I have uploaded 3 videos each week for like the past 2 or 3 weeks. I can’t recall anymore…. must keep going. I have 3 more for you all this week. In January I did a paper stencil and found object video in which I used some store bought items to use as the printing stencil with an open mesh screen. It was a very experimental video but everyone loved it and it was a lot of fun to do as are most of my videos. Therefore I knew right away that I would be doing another paper stencil video in the very near future. And that time is now. I have successfully uploaded the second video about how to screen print tee shirts with hand cut paper stencils.

This one is called, “How To Screen Print T Shirts Using Hand Cut Paper Stencils.” Obviously by the title you can guess what this educational screenprinting video is all about. Not only do I tell you a little bit about the paper stencil process but I did a time lapse of the cutting work. So you get to see me actually cut out all 4 stencils we use to demonstrate the process in the video. This is a really fun process for kids, schools, fine art work and even hobbyist usages. It would make a great hands on activity for anyone who is into printing, craft making and art. I had a great deal of fun doing this myself and I have been screen printing for a long time. It was interesting to me as I got a kick out of printing such detailed and cool designs with a piece of computer paper. I cut and printed a cat, wolf, bird and a sign of sorts. If I have more time in the future I may experiment with this process and print some unique one off fine art prints. I think that would be a lot of fun.

So make sure to drop by the YouTube channel or the website and have a look at the latest Catspit screenprinting videos. And please remember to take advantage of the promotional discount codes for screen printing supplies:

Straight from the Imprinted Sportswear Show in Long Beach, we give you  the newest screen printing Screen Washing System to hit the industry in 2012! First, thanks goes to Catspit Productions who deemed this a cool, highly worthy cleaning system and then helped us produce this video. View it here!

The best feature of the 2536 High Pressure (HP) cleaning system is that it offers a way for the operator to gain a controlled environment in which to: develop and degrease screens, reclaim screens; perform ink removal, stencil and haze removal (to banish ghost images) – all in one box. The RhinoClean 2536 HP holds up to 1/25″ x 36″ screen frame or 2/20″ x 24″ frames.

By bundling multiple functions this way,  graphics and textile screen printers have an improved method to handle what the general consensus is “the worst job in the shop”.
