How To Screen Print Tee Shirts: Vector Artwork Vs Bitmap Raster Images

Okay so I’m no graphic art expert but this should give you a basic idea of the differences between the 2 types of graphics files. I thought it would be a good idea to make this info more accessible even though I have covered this before. Also I apologize for the few focusing issues near the end of the video. For some reason the auto focus was trying to focus on my hands. Go figure. Well I don’t have a huge video production department and staff so you’ll have to forgive me 😉

This educational video is about what I know on vector vs bitmap or raster art. I’m sure there are more technical explanations of how these different types of screen printing artwork render themselves but this should give you a basic idea of the fundamental difference. Many people use Photoshop to create screen printing graphics and that’s great. In fact you will need to learn how to use Photoshop for your print work art. But the first place you should start is with vector art and vector software and there are a couple of reasons for that. This video touches on these things and gives you my recommendations for screenprinting artwork creation. Adobe Illustrator and Corel Draw create vector files whereas Photoshop makes image files. Learn about JPEG, PNG, and TIFF file formats and what size would be suitable for Illustrator to convert to vector. This is a great general tutorial which will help you better understand screenprinting artwork and graphics. Enjoy!

Cheap Imported Screen Printing Presses?

Yes, they’re cheap. It’s true they offer a lot and promise the world. Sure you can get a lot for your money….. or can you? Does it have magnets to hold up the print head? Is it designed poorly? Is it made well? Do they offer service and parts? Can you see it in person? Will it last? Does it have a lifetime guarantee?

Trust me. If you’re in the Phoenix area or anywhere in the continental US and you’re looking at equipment on Ebay, Craigslist or anywhere else then stop and take a moment to evaluate what you are looking at for what it is.

Yes, my manual rotary screen printing presses will cost you more than cheap imports but they give you more. Simple, reliable designs, heavy duty build and a lifetime guarantee. Free parts for as long as you own it. You cannot go wrong. All steel construction made in the USA by American workers feeding their families.

Screen Printing T-Shirts Tip: Beware! Volume Blank Shirt Scam Alert!

Just a quick public service announcement from yours truly…..

This is a tutorial screen printing video inspired by one of our faithful YouTube viewers. I wanted to make you aware of an email scam that deals with large volumes of blank shirts and local screen printers. If you get an email from someone asking for a quotation for 1000 or more blank tee shirts you should proceed with extreme caution. This is most likely a fraudulent scam. Check out the video for my thought on why this is a scam and why you should avoid responding altogether. Sometimes the person will ask for a quote of about 1000 blank garments in a specific brand and model. It’s often split up into 2 sizes only. They will ask to pay by credit card. This type of email should be a red flag for you since you are not a blank garment wholesaler. As a screen printer it is not normal for people to buy blank shirts from you. You print them for your profits. Nothing less. Watch this video to avoid troubles from those money scammers online trying to take your money with a smile and a handshake.

Screen Printing Tee Shirts: How To Create The Best Spot Color Film Positives

This is a remake of a very old video about how to make film positives at home. I thought it was time to produce a more professional version with more information. So this video is packed with info about making film positives for spot colors without RIP or all black ink systems.

The original video was a version focusing on a few home brew methods to making film positives for screen printing tee shirts. This new and improved video is packed with more detailed info on how we would do this in a more professional manner. Here you will learn about different types of film positives, printing without RIP software for spot colors and color rich blacks. This tutorial video brings you from computer to printed film positive with tips for the beginner as well as the experienced screen printer. When we deal with basic spot color art we can do a few things in order to make the standard Epson inkjet printer with all color inks print a much better film positive. This is for when we do not use RIP software and print directly from our vector software to the inkjet printer. With the tips I share in this video you will be making the absolute best film positives without RIP and without all black ink systems of any kind.

Screen Printing Tee Shirts: Detailed Small Manual Commercial Shop Tour

Okay so this video is a little longer just so you can get a good look at my space without having to pause or rewind and watch parts over. I hope it’s not too long but in this video we discuss what is needed to set up shop. Make sure to check out the forum link below for more detailed info and more links to even more information about shop set up in smaller spaces.

This educational video is intended to help you set up a manual commercial screen printing shop for printing textiles such as tee shirts and hoodies. Here I give you a close up look at my space including the showroom area and print shop. Then in the print shop we look at the equipment I have set up and how I have it placed in my 625 square foot print shop. We have about 1250 square feet split almost equally in half. There may be slightly more room in the print shop than the office area. This set up video should help you with your spaces up to 1000 square feet or smaller and it gives you an idea of equipment layouts. Learn about the equipment needed and the space requirements as well as other information available in the forum link below where you will find links for our 500 square foot manual shop tour and the video about using the shop space as your darkroom. The flowing links to the forum article is a nice written breakdown of what is discussed on the video plus more like possible electrical needs. There are general supply lists and chemical usage breakdowns as well here for you to review along with the video content.

Screen Printing Tee Shirts: How To Price Your Print Work

Okay so I uploaded this late Friday I think and then I was supposed to post about it Saturday but I got a rush in the storefront with about 3 or 4 customers coming in at once or in sequence. It was a busy Saturday! I can understand why since I’m the only screen print supplier open on Saturdays in Phoenix, Arizona. Make sure to watch the entire video for the secret information on pricing…. LOL 😉

There are literally many different ways to try to figure out how to price your screenprinting work. There are equations, spreadsheets, programs, add on software and more. But ultimately it comes down to the “going rate” in your geographical area and what you’re happy making “per hour” in the end. Also remember spreadsheets and software often does not take into consideration the very different labor times involved with different print jobs. So we have to look at each job specifically and see how long it will take to produce. The consumables factoring into this equation should be negligible since we should be using them and managing them properly in how we work. In other words if a $40 gallon of ink is an overhead issue, you’re doing something seriously wrong. Ink and emulsion per shirt should end up being pennies not dollars and a gallon of ink or emulsion will make you thousands of dollars when used properly. Obviously when you first start learning to screen print you will use more consumables than you will once you gain some experience.

Check out this forum link for more details and examples of pricing charts:

Phoenix, Arizona Screen Printing Supplies Store Open Late and Saturdays!

As you all know I have been busy at the storefront lately. I’m getting more foot traffic and keeping things in stock is a daily task now. Currently I am trying to edit a video about how to price your screen printing jobs, trying to cut squeegee, and getting screens on the shelves. So I think I’ll either have a late upload on YouTube or maybe I’ll upload tomorrow morning. I still have to review the footage to see if I even like it. Sometimes I shoot a video and think… “Does this one suck?” LOL 😉
