New Screen Printing Video: Choosing Squeegee Size

Another new screen printing video has been uploaded to YouTube. This one is called, “How To Screen Print: Choosing Squeegee Size”. This is a quick tip video that expands on the reasons why it is always good to choose the squeegee size based on your stencil size. It points out the 2 factors which make this worthwhile to include in your efforts to eliminate variables that can affect your printing. I hope you all enjoy this video!

I am making more videos that are short with a quick lesson or “tip”. I hope that these will be a little easier to understand and make it quicker for you to find specific information on individual topics. The shorter videos are more popular on YouTube so I hope this will spread the Catspit bug a little more too. The idea is to give you some valuable screenprinting information in a quicker, shorter video which is easier to follow.

These new quick tip style videos also open up the opportunity for viewers to suggest topics. I think I could do this type of video on most any topic; especially if it is a question of method or technique. Of course the request has to be practical and within reason for doing a 5 minute or less video. So if you have any ideas or comments on this, please feel free to make them here or message me on YouTube.

New Screen Printing Article Added To Website

I have posted another great screen printing article on the Catspit website in the Article Archive section. Many of the screenprinting articles on the website are introductory in nature. The idea being to make it simple for everyone to read and understand.  Here we take a look at the different types of film positives that can be used for screen printing tee shirts at home or for profit.

The article is called, “Types Of Film Positives For Making Screens”. This article gives you a basic rundown of common film positives and some of their pros or cons. I briefly touch on inkjet, laser, vellum and thermal films. I also discuss image setters and a couple of alternative methods known to be used.

I think this is a great article for those of you who are just starting to figure out how to make film positives at home. So if you are researching film positives for making screens for screenprinting, make sure to stop by the website and have a look. I’m sure you will be happy you did. Good luck!

New Screen Printing Video: Direct To Garment Shirt Printer

So I had some trouble uploading to YouTube yesterday and after about 7 attempts the video finally went live last night. This was the first time I have ever had any problems trying to upload a video to YouTube. I have no idea what the problem was but all is well. The new video is another ISS show video. I have a couple left that I decided were good enough to post. I think I have 2 more and then after the New Year I will upload a few SGIA show videos from Las Vegas. All of the new videos for the new year will be in a new, higher quality format.

This new video is called, “How To Screenprint: Direct To Garment Tee Shirt Printer”. This is another video featuring a giant Kornit direct to garment tee shirt printer. Now these units are huge and not intended for the average screen printer. You need some serious production demands to warrant this type of equipment. But there are many online services offering singular custom tee shirt printing for very affordable pricing. Most all of those types of companies use the DTG or direct to garment printers. The big difference is that they use the industrial units rather than the low end table top units which you may see at your local mall kiosk. I truly believe the printing quality from the larger industrial units is far better than that of the smaller table top units. You will get to see a close up of the printing from the DTG machine featured in this video.

M&R I-Dot

M&R I-Dot

I think the one and only “low end machine” that produces very high quality printing consistently without problems is the M&R iDOT. But again, you really need the demand for this type of product to justify the expense. These machines are great for high traffic tourist attractions or retail spaces. Tourist traps are the most likely prime candidates in my opinion. But there are many screen printers who add direct to garment printing to their services and do quite well with them. In the end it will depend on your demand for that type of instant custom product.

A New Year Approaches With New Screen Printing Videos

So I am having a lot of fun making screen printing videos right now and posting them once every Monday. I am using the last of the video footage I recorded with other, older cameras. Some are retakes with the same cameras but starting in December I will be changing the format to a wide screen, high quality video. The camera is actually an HD unit but I am still learning how to use it and edit videos.

I am finding it harder to edit the videos and keep the HD, widescreen format. I have Sony Vegas and of course Movie Maker but when I use Vegas, it keeps changing my video format. Oh yes, everything is much harder to do in Vegas too. I am working on it. But in the meantime I can at least produce widescreen videos that far exceede the quality of my previous ones. And as we get into the New Year I hope to learn how to make better videos with a higher production value.

Sony Handycam XR350v

The new camera I bought is the Sony Handycam XR350v. I really like it but one big draw back in my eyes is that you have to convert the video format it produces to mpeg or wmv with Sony software included. It ends up using more hard drive space and requires more time to do. It may be because of the HD format, I am not an expert on these things so there may be a reason it doesn’t produce easily usable file formats. It may even be that I haven’t figured out how to change the file format. I am not even sure if I can… LOL. Anyway, you get the idea. I have a lot to learn.

I really would like to use my photographic background and do some creative videos. I have started to dabble with that a bit and I have produced a techno screen printing music video. It is my first concentrated effort to be a little creative with the camera and editing. I want to carry this concept into my regular videos and make them a bit more entertaining to watch.

Hang in there and let see what the next few months will bring us in new screenprinting videos. Learn how to screen print with Catspit Productions, LLC!

New Screenprinting Video: Unclogging Screens On Press

Another new screen printing video has been uploaded to YouTube! Just as I have promised; 1 new video each Monday until December 20th! This video is called, “How To Screen Print: Unclogging Screens On Press”. In it I briefly discuss the usage of screen opener to unclog screens during print runs. This should be a handy tip especially for those of you using water based inks.

Remember, you can now buy many of the screen printing products mentioned in my videos with a Catspit discount. For more information, please visit the Print Supplies page of the Catspit website.

Make sure to visit YouTube and watch this new video before I release a new one next Monday! Thanks for reading. Learn how to screen print with Catspit Productions, LLC!

Screen Printing Emulsions: Photopolymers Vs. Dual Cures

The 2 most popular types of emulsions on the market today seem to be dual cure and photopolymer. Each of the 2 different emulsions have very different characteristics. These unique properties makes it possible to use either emulsion to adapt to your own printing situation. The type of art , film and even the screens you use may be partnered up with the right emulsion to give you better results and an easier time printing.

Rather than try to explain all the different situations you might use either emulsion, I will describe the different characteristics that I think will affect you most at home. There are three points I will make about each of the 2 emulsions. Hopefully you will be able to digest this information and apply it to your own printing needs. You should be able to do this easily.

Graphic HU

Dual Cure Emulsion

One of the first things to note about dual cure emulsions and photopolymers is that the shelf life is very different. A dual cure comes with the sensitizer separate and has to be mixed into the emulsion base. As soon as this is done, the clock starts ticking and most dual cure emulsions will have a standard shelf life of about 1 month. This is giving that the ambient humidity and room temperature are not extreme in variances. Temperature and heat exposure will affect all emulsions and their shelf life. That being said, photopolymer emulsions may have a shelf life of up to 1 year and they do not need to be mixed. Shelf life may be the single most important factor in purchasing an emulsion. If you can’t use the emulsion before it spoils, then it may be a good idea to go with longer shelf life.

The second major concern is the exposure latitude of the emulsion. This refers to the emulsions ability to give you a good exposure, and stencil, within specific time interval. Dual cure emulsions have a much wider exposure latitude which means they are forgiving and will make a good stencil at a wider range of exposure times. This means that it will be easier to burn a screen, especially with detail, using a dual cure emulsion. That also means it will work well with inferior films or films that are not dense enough to block all of the exposure source light. Dual cure emulsions will work well with vellums, transparencies and other home made film positives.

On the other hand, photopolymer emulsions need very, very dense or opaque film because they have a smaller exposure latitude. With a photopolymer it is important to come as close as possible to the perfect exposure time. If this exposure time is long enough for light to pass through your film and semi cure the emulsion, then you will have trouble getting your stencil to wash out properly. That’s why a completely black film positive is needed to block all of the exposure source light. Therefore if you are working with inferior film positives, you may want to consider using an emulsion with a wider exposure latitude.

The last thing to consider is the exposure time itself. Dual cure emulsions may have a wider exposure latitude but they also take longer to expose and cure than photopolymer emulsions. A screen with film that may take 40 seconds with a photopolymer emulsion will take perhaps 3 minutes on the same light table for a dual cure emulsion. This is just a “guestimation” being that I am not actually comparing real results but they are for illustrative purposes. One reason you may want to consider this when buying emulsions is that heat may cure emulsions. If your light source puts off a lot of heat, it may cause problems with a longer exposure time, savvy?

So here it is:

Dual Cure Emulsions – wider exposure latitude, more forgiving with incorrect exposure times and poor film positives, only last about 1 month on the shelf, needs to be mixed with sensitizer.

Photopolymer Emulsions – smaller exposure latitude, less forgiving with incorrect exposure times and poor film positives, lasts up to 1 year on the shelf, does not need to be mixed with sensitizer.

Now you have some technical information about screen printing emulsions that will help you in your screen making process. Please visit the Catspit Productions website to learn all about the screenprinting process.

New Screen Printing Video Uploaded To YouTube: Safelights For Screen Making

Here we go! As I have promised; 1 screen printing video each Monday until December 20th. I think I can, I think I can…

A brand new screenprinting video has been uploaded to YouTube. This one is called “How To Screen Print: Safelights For Screen Making”. This is another quick tip video in which I discuss safelights for screen making. Believe it or not, many people struggle with this and often expose their screens to unnecessary daylight. This can cause many strange and bewildering problems during screen making. I find it is always best to eliminate variables even when you may not be sure if the variable is contributing to a particular problem.

Remember, emulsions are sensitive to ultra violet light or UV light. Yellow filters will block UV light and red ones also block UV light. Therefore a red or yellow filter on any light will do or you can buy a red or yellow light. Certain amber or orange looking filters will work as well.

Vector Art Conversions: A New Catspit Logo

I have teamed up with Joe Wicked from YouTube to create an entirely new Catspit Productions logo. This is a very cool new logo that I will be calling the “Tom Cat” logo. I really love this concept that Joe did for me. I love the cat head as it reminds me of old Tom form Tom & Jerry. That was one of my favorite cartoons as a kid and I still watch them today whenever I have a chance.

Joe Wicked's "Tom Cat" Logo

Joe Wicked's "Tom Cat" Logo

I received the raw artwork from Joe last week and I am in the process of scanning it. Then it has to be redrawn in the computer and made into vector artwork. This is a process which will make the hand drawn art digitized and able to be manipulated and color separated. Speaking of which, if you need to get some artwork converted into vector, visit the Artwork Services page of the Catspit website and check out the information there.

I have added the service of vector art conversions to help out the many beginners in the screen printing industry. Artwork is the single most important phase of creating a screen print. If your artwork is poor then no matter how good you are at screen printing, the print is going to turn out badly. It is imperative to understand how to create artwork for screen printing but the first step in doing that is working with vector art and understanding how to create it.

Since most of us are not professional graphic artists, including myself, having a service which can convert hand drawings and other scanned artwork into true vector art is a great help. I can use a low res JPEG, PNG, TIFF or any other digital graphic format readable by the PC to make vector art files in EPS format.

I am excited to offer this new service and when the new Tom Cat logo is done I will post the vector image to show everyone the results of this service. You can go to the Artwork Services page and see a simple example of the conversion right now. Thanks a bunch Joe! I can’t wait until it is ready for printing.

New Screen Printing Video Uploaded To YouTube: Using Micro Registration

A new screen printing video has been uploaded to YouTube. This video is about using micro registration on press to register screens with a multi color job. It covers micro registration and how it is used in more depth than I have done before. I know I addressed this in the tee shirt press video but I thought I would focus on it and perhaps make it a little bit more clear for some.

The new screenprinting video is called. “How To Screen Print: Using Micro Registration”. You will get to see a close up view the print head as I demonstrate the movements of the head with micro registration. You will also get to see an example of why it is so important to keep your press very clean and well lubricated. For all of you who asked to see problems arise in a video, well this one sort of has a bit of that. You will definitely understand why I say good, functional equipment is a must.

I plan on releasing 1 video each Monday, starting today, all the way through December 20th. I need your help in keeping the video counts rising on each new video. YouTube likes that…LOL. Can you all keep up with me?

Screen Printing News: Great New Videos On The Way!

I am really excited about the new blog and I am hoping to add more valuable content to it as we move forward. Right now the blog is very much just that. It’s a personal place where I mostly write about what I am up to, what is new on the website and when new videos are uploaded to the YouTube channel. So there are often quick and very short entries about the latest activity that I have been engaged in. I also write some article type blog entries which are much like the formal articles I write for the website. I want to add more of those types of blog entries to the new WordPress blog for Catspit Productions.

At the same time I don’t want the blog to become a clone of the many other garment embellishing blogs. Meaning that I want to keep my blog personal and casual. Although it does promote myself and the screenprinting educational efforts online, I don’t want it to become a commercial product. In fact, I’d like to keep all of my online presence very personal and real. Speaking of which…. on to matters of screenprinting tee shirts!

I have received some water based ink samples including some discharge inks from Antex for screen printing.

Antex Inks & Foils

Antex Inks & Foils

They sent some inks for me to test and do videos with in exchange for a free plug. So I figured I’d start by giving you all a sneak peak at what is to come. They also sent some foil adhesive and foils. I think we have enough products to make videos about: water based inks, discharge inks, foiling, and perhaps a specialty ink effect video too. It will take some time to do all of the video work and product testing. Then it takes some time for the video to get on deck in the uploading schedule. Therefore we won’t see these videos for some time but I’ll keep you all posted! Great new videos on the way! Stay up to date witht the Catspit Blog.

I do plan on releasing 1 video each week through the end of November. It takes a decent amount of work to make videos and it has to be done around or scheduled with existing print work or other business activities. But I have a lot of fun making them and interacting with the people who watch them after being uploaded to YouTube. If I had my way I would be making more videos than people would probably watch…. LOL.
