How To Screen Print Tee Shirts: Setting Up & Exposing 2 Color Screens

This screen printing video is the second about using host separations in Adobe Illustrator to create film positives for printing tee shirts. Here we have the film positives printed out and it’s time to make the screens. You can follow along as I set up the film positives for this 2 color print and get some inside tips on the process. Forgive me but the color got a little screwed up in the opening shots compared to the ending. I left the red safelights on in the beginning by accident and it colored the video very red which made the ending part look very blue….LOL. The cameras I have actually suck 😉 I have 2 of the same units and they each record in their own color cast. One is cool one is hot. Go figure. Anyway this video should prove valuable for anyone wanting to set up a multi-color screen print job. Hopefully the lighting snafus won’t bother you and the information will be worth it. Enjoy!

How To Screen Print Tee Shirts: Host Based Color Separations in AI

This screen printing video is about using host separations in Adobe Illustrator to create film positives for printing tee shirts. In this video I am using host separations even though a few times I refer to it as RIP separations. In actuality AI did the separations, not the RIP. But you can use RIP to do color separations if you wish depending on which RIP software version you have. Also forgive me at the end when I confused the printer profiles with the printer chooser…. LOL. There were a few anomalies in this video and the audio is poor but I didn’t have time to reshoot. I have too many things going on this week but you should get the idea from the video. The video walks you through how to create spot colors in order to use the host separations with RIP software to automatically separate the colors and produce the needed inkjet film positives. You’ll just have to put up with some heavy breathing and a few minor snafus. Enjoy!

Squeegee Blade Runner: In Theaters Soon!

I think I need to make a Mad Max type movie about a screen printer who still prints tee shirts in a futuristic world where petroleum products are rare making the production of inks near impossible. The search for a suitable replacement leads him on a fantastic voyage through dark worlds of over lords and human oil products. Wait what? Is this Sci Fi, horror or both?

Much of the time it’s all about chance and just being there when it happens. Then you have to have the skills to get the photo…. LOL.

Screen Printing Photography and Imagery

Here’s another still of some metal handle squeegees I did with my crappy camera…. LOL. I do a lot of these. But I do most all of the composition and lighting in camera. Then I bring it into Photoshop for a few minor tweaks. Digital photography is a lot of fun because it is very forgiving and inexpensive to make images. Analogue photography can take a lot of time and money to work with. I’ve been having a lot of fun helping people learn how to screen print tee shirts these days and working some still photography into that has been enjoyable.

But remember there’s always something new to learn and I’m not the end all of screen printing. I am good at what I do but there are a lot of excellent screen printers out there that have wicked skill at highly technical printing on textiles and posters. I think what I am saying is it’s always important to remember you can always learn something new from someone else and no one single person knows it all. What I teach in my videos is simply my personal take on the subject. Enjoy it for what it is and always seek new knowledge. Have a great weekend everyone! How To Screen Print: Building Up Stencil Thickness For Better Opacity?

This is a very late upload because I had to render this bad boy 3 times to get it right… LOL 😉 This educational screen printing video discusses a topic I have been getting a lot of questions about recently. I thought it would be a good idea to discuss the realities of building up stencil thickness on screens by doing multiple emulsion coatings. The idea is to create a thicker stencil and achieve a higher emulsion over mesh ratio in order to create a substrate side ink well that will increase the printed ink volume. Much like what is done with high density screen printing but on a much smaller scale. This video discusses this method and process and explains why you don’t really need to be concerned with this tactic as a viable, cure all solution. In this educational screenprinting video you’ll learn what really makes the difference when screen printing tee shirts on a manual rotary textile press. And you’ll learn what emulsion over mesh means as well as how people achieve it. As you’ll see in my professional opinion you don’t need to waste time trying to build up the stencil thickness if you’re more concerned with the actual set up of the print job. It’s the set up itself and your flood and stroke that make the bigger difference. Watch this video and find out why!

Screen Printing Instructional and Educational Videos

I’m working on some artwork for a few fun screen printing videos. I want to do one as a 2 color with soft hand base or reducer as a color and another 2 color on black with maybe white and red or yellow. The idea is to show how simple designs can look very cool utilizing only 2 colors. I’ll be using some clip art I have so I hope I create some cool stuff to work with but I always feel like I wish I had someone else do it. I’m too close to the Catspit logos and it’s hard for me to stray far from them which can be boring…LOL. I think I will also do another video this week answering a question I get a lot about doing a double coat of emulsion on screens in order to increase print opacity. I want to discuss that tactic as opposed to simply using the right set up in the first place. So we have a few video ideas in the works and I hope to have a little fun with screen printing next week. I’m also getting ready to move my home closer to the storefront so I have a lot on my plate this month. Bear with me 😉

How To Screen Print: The Tekmar Table Top Spot Cleaning Station

This educational screen printing video features a product review for the Tekmar Exhaustex 1500 table top spot cleaning station. This little device consists of 2 items that make up a table top spot cleaning station. Here you’ll see it with the Tekmar Target TG125 spot cleaning gun. We use the spot cleaning gun to remove cured and semi cured plastisol inks. You will want to make sure the ink is cured before attempting to use this product. In this tutorial video we take a close up look at the product and the process for usage. Follow along as we see what the spot cleaning station is and what it does for you in the shop. You’ll get to see the unit close up with a demo of removing plastisol inks with the spot cleaning fluid and the spot gun.
