Screen Printing Information Overload!

There is a lot of information on the internet about screen printing. Some internet information is good. Some information is great and even more is technical in nature. So how do you find a balance of good advice and easy to understand technical information without getting bogged down in all the misinformation that will actually harm your printing endeavors?

The truth probably is that if you are just starting to learn, you will not really be able to discern good information from bogus unless you are uncommonly intelligent or perceptive. That is where learning and experience comes in.

I think the best thing to do is to read and absorb as much as you can and as you get into your research it will become obvious which information is consistently repeated throughout the internet. It’s probably a good idea to start with methods that many people use with great success. Any process that is easily repeatable and produces high quality results is worth knowing.

If you like to watch tutorial videos, be sure to read about what you watch in order to learn about information that is skimmed over or overlooked altogether. I know sometimes when I make my videos; I make mistakes or forget to mention something very important. That’s why the YouTube annotations are so useful. But just remember, videos can be misleading and lie by omission.

It is always a good idea to thoroughly test any advice or technique that you read about on the internet before you implement it into your production run. Be certain you are comfortable with the process before promising things to your customers.

Finally, ask questions. Whenever possible, ask someone for their advice or instructions about the process you are interested in. This can help balance, verify or demystify things you learn on the internet.

Remember; you can always ask questions about screen printing and get detailed answers from Catspit Productions. Just use the contact form on the website.

Learn To Screen Print: I’ll Teach You How To Compete With Me!

You must have read the title of this blog and said what? Is this guy serious? No, of course I am not serious but many people might see my printing shirts as a negative or competing action against those I teach. That couldn’t be further from the truth.

The screen printed garment industry is very dynamic and in most areas there seems to always be some kind of print work to do. It is true that it can be very cut throat and you will need to be competitive in your pricing. But screen printing seems to be one of those industries that almost anyone can succeed at.

If you apply good business skills with high quality print work at a great price, then almost anyone can find a place for themselves in this industry. Most small, local screen printers rely very much on word of mouth and networking to get print jobs. If you are well connected in your community with businesses, schools and organizations you have a great advantage.

If you know everyone in town and went to high school with them, you could also have a nice opportunity. Social networking and word of mouth are very important marketing tools for small screen printers.

A lot of the time getting print jobs is more about being in the right place at the right time and knowing the right people. I don’t know any screen printer who aggressively pursues marketing campaigns against other local printers. Most will boast about their work and their prices. Many will do advertisements to get their names out there. But it’s not like an all out war against one another.

Like most honest screen printers, I do not practice cut throat pricing at any time. I enjoy providing my customers with a great product at a good price but I have to make a profit at the same time. That is business. It’s called earning a living and no one should be ashamed of trying to do the best they can.

I’d much rather work with screen printers in my area and ensure that everyone makes a profit. And having colleagues in your home town can also be a great advantage.

Friday Update

A new video is in the works and will be uploaded  at the beginning of next week. I’m thinking on Monday or Tuesday it will be ready. This is a video I promised to do about self weeding laser heat transfer paper. I figured since the first 2 heat transfer videos are so popular and continue to get a lot of views, I should definitely follow through and make this video. It is amazing to see how popular heat transfer videos are.

I guess it is the temptation of being able to produce your own shirts on a whim with a computer that is so appealing. And I admit, it is a lot of fun to make quick heat transfer shirts for friends and family.

On another note there has been a big addition to the website in that there is a totally brand new Articles Archive page in the Printing Articles section. This is where all the newest screen printing articles will be found. The new Article Archive page sports a new format for the articles and is easier to find information with. All existing articles will remain where they are.

So stay tuned for the new video release and go to the Catspit website to check out the Articles Archive page. There are already 3 new screen printing articles posted there.

Great Print Jobs Feel Good!

There is no doubt about it. Printing a high quality product at a competitive price which your customer loves is rewarding and feels good. You can obtain great satisfaction in making your customers happy.

Whenever I print a job it is always a pleasure when the job goes well and the work is top notch. And as long as your job is well planned with great artwork, the print run should always go well. That is why pre press activity is so important.

Spend the time with your customer to get the artwork done to their liking while at the same time ensuring that it will print well. Taking the extra time to double check artwork and make sure it has been well proofed by your customer can save a lot of time and agony in the long run. It can also save money. If you are positive and confident in what your customer is asking for and expecting, then you can print the job knowing you are doing it right.

Having confidence and pride in your product when you deliver it is also a very rewarding feeling. Extra effort and hard work pays off in the end. And your customer will come back for more of your quality work.

The Catspit Productions Website Is Growing

Now that the basic structure of the website is in place, I am trying to focus on content. At the moment, I am the only contributing author to the website and it takes a good amount of effort to come up with articles that are general and introductory in nature but informational at the same time.

In time the content of the website will grow and it will contain more answers and information about screen printing that you can search for using the site search function.

At some point I will look for information and articles from other credible resources in the screen printing industry. The website is still in its infancy and needs to build a bit more clout before I approach prospective authors for website material.

A new Printing Articles section will be added this week. It will be an article Archives page where all the newest articles will be listed as links. Click the link and it will bring you to the article page. This will help make it easier to find information rather than having articles ganged up on one page. All existing article pages will remain the same.

Please help spread the word about the Catspit Productions website and make sure to sign in on the Guestbook to share your thoughts with everyone.

About The Catspit Name & Logo

In December of 1989 I was just beginning college at Arizona State University. I had moved to Mesa from New York City to stay with my Mother and go to school. I was new to the area and had few friends. I spent much of my time working on my degree alone and I thought it would be nice to get a fury little friend.

I found a 6 week old all black female kitten in a local pet store in a 10 gallon fish tank with her brother. I took her home and named her Swan Song after the recording label of my favorite band. The name also has its own iconic meaning in literature.

Over the years we spent together I noticed how when I would pet her and give her love she would salivate excessively and shake her head like a dog throwing the spit everywhere. And I mean a lot of spit, all over the place. Yes, Catspit!

So when I came to form the business on paper, I named It Catspit Productions with the inspiration coming from my now adult cat Swan Song. That explains the name.

In May of 2008 my apartment burned down and Swan Song died from smoke inhalation. She was 18 years old. I was devastated. I had never thought of her not being around. About this time I was playing with logos for my business and I wanted it to be something meaningful. Since the business was already named with inspiration from Swan Song, I took the next logical step.

That is where the skull and cross bones come in. It is a tribute to the death of my longtime companion and friend, Swan Song. The two green swirls in the back are representative of the two electron orbits of the number two element, Helium which is the fuel for stars.

For me, being an amateur scientist, astronomer and physicist, the skull and bones with the two electron orbits of Helium represents life and death. It represents the life and death of Swan Song.

The logo is very personal to me and I understand that it is not agreeable to some but we live in an educated, sophisticated time and I would hope people understand that the bottom line is that it is just a logo. There isn’t any hidden message or secret meaning; just a design in memory of an old friend. Don’t worry; your shirts won’t be delivered in a privateer either. Ahoy!
