New Video Uploaded To YouTube: Inkjet Transfers Vs. Screen Printing

Another brand new video about inkjet transfers and screen printing has been uploaded to YouTube this morning. This video compares a few samples of Avery inkjet heat transfers to direct, plastisol screen printing. Here you get to see what an inkjet transferred shirt looks like after it has been laundered as compared to screen printed garment. The video is called, “How To Screen Print: Inkjet Heat Transfers Vs. Screen Printing”.

I often am asked about which process to use when starting a shirt business. I think people have the misconception that heat transfers are the same or similar to direct screen printing. That is not the case and direct screen printing using plastisol inks will always give the best colors, coverage, durability and flexibility needed to produce a long lasting high quality commercial product on light or dark garments.

That is not to say that you can’t make some money selling novelty items using the transfers processes. There are definitely commercial grade heat transfers printed by computer that will give great results on a variety of items. But for tee shirts; transfers tend to be best for point of sale, where the customer will settle for a lesser product in return for immediate customization or in very low quantity print runs with complicated graphics.

This video should help you understand the differences in quality, longevity and overall print results. As always, thanks for watching Catspit Productions videos on YouTube.

Do You Yudu? Well… Do You?

Don’t worry; you won’t get in trouble or anything. I just wanted to let you know where you can get some great information related to your Yudu machine. There is a cool screen printing blog run by Michelle Licudine that really focuses on the Yudu process. It is a screen printing blog so you will find other great information there as well.

The blog site is called You can Screen Print. This is a great website for anyone who is just starting out to print at home in the garage or people using the Yudu in the kitchen. Either way you should find some helpful information to get you going at home with screen printing.

Michelle was kind enough to network with us here at Catspit Productions and I was happy to do an interview article for the blog site. You will find the You Can Screen Print link in our link exchange as well.

Makes sure to check it out and get all of the inside info on the Yudu!

The ISS Videos Look Great!

I have been working on and sorting through all of the awesome video that I took at the ISS show in Long Beach, California this year. Catspit Productions was able to get a press pass and make video at all of the vendor booths who were willing to share their great products with us. There were even a few who made a video for us by telling us about their product or demonstrating it.

Greg Jensen from Saati made a video for us as well as Jim Larson from Shur-Loc and Riley Hopkins from Riley Hopkins Screen Printing Machinery, LLC. It was so much fun making videos with these people and I can’t wait to post them. Meeting Ryan Moor was a special treat because as you know he has many videos on YouTube which we have all seen before.

Other companies that let us video their booth were, M&R, Antec, Workhorse, Lawson, Brown, Vastex, Tekmar, Brother, Geo Knight, The Ultimate Numbering System and many more. I will keep you posted as to when these videos will be uploaded to YouTube. Learn how to screen print with Catspit Productions, LLC!

Catspit Productions & The 2010 ISS In Long Beach, California

I was so happy to be able to go the the ISS in Long Beach this year. The show is so much fun just to go to and walk around but being able to make video with a press pass is even better. I’d like to thank Erin Cianciolo from Nielsen for facilitating Catspit Productions in getting a legitimate press pass which allowed us to make videos with willing vendors. Erin was very helpful and courteous in her efforts to assist me. Let’s note that it is not possible to film or photograph the exhibit hall without a press pass. Thank you very much Erin Cianciolo.

I’d like to thank these people and their respective companies for making videos with me for the Catspit Productions YouTube channel: Greg Jensen from Saati, Jim Larson from Shur-Loc Fabric Systems, and Riley Hopkins from Riley Hopkins Screen Printing Machinery.

Let’s also thank all of the other various companies who allowed me to make video their equipment. And thanks to Dan Axelsen from Workhorse Products who will allow me to come to the Workhorse factory here in Phoenix to make a tour video as well.

I was able to make a lot of great videos for the Catspit Productions screen printing YouTube channel. It was especially fun to meet Ryan Moor and make a video with him. I can’t wait to post the videos. I wish I could just upload them all at once but it takes time to edit them and of course it is always better to spread them out a bit. So stay tuned for all of the great ISS video that will be coming up on the Catspit YouTube channel this year.

Once again I’d like to thank all of the people who watch my videos and visit the Catspit website. It is so much fun being able to teach screen printing to so many people who are willing to learn and are so supportive of my efforts.

Airbrushing & Screen Printing: Can They Be Combined?

Airbrushing has often been combined with screen printing with various degrees of success. One of the best screen print/air brush hybrid methods I’ve seen was done on a black satin baseball jacket or wind breaker. The guy would print a design in white ink on the black satin jackets and cure them normally. Then he would air brush different colors into the design without any masking or cropping the over spray.

The key factor in this method was that wherever he over sprayed onto the black satin, the air brush paint would basically disappear into the satin fabric and be invisible. He would work 1 color at a time moving through the order of jackets. I am not sure if he used any special air brush paint. I think it was a standard air dry type. But the air brush paint adhered very well to the plastisol ink and to this day some of these jackets still exist in great shape.

I do not know a lot about airbrushing or the paints used but the effect that this guy achieved with his technique was great. And it was a cheap way to give the customer a fancy multi colored design without the costs of all the set up and printing. However, it did take some time to do the airbrushing and it was necessary to charge extra for each airbrushed color but it was cheaper than direct screen printing for the customer.

Obviously this method was limited to black satin jackets but black is a very popular color to sell anyway. So that was never a real issue especially when the customer learns they could get a multicolored print without all the extra costs of screen printing set up. So the compromise of the black jacket was never a problem. These jackets sold very well for many years in the local area of this screen printer.

New Video Uploaded To YouTube!

Another new video about screen printing tee shirts has been posted to the Catspit Productions YouTube channel. This video is about spray tacks for screen printing textiles.

The video covers Sprayway pallet adhesives and which ones to use for different applications. The video talks about spray mist, flash spray mist and flash web pallet adhesives.

It is important to note that this video is not a paid endorsement for Sprayway. I just happen to use their products. There are many other brands of pallet adhesives including Camie which will work just as well. If you have any questions regarding where to purchase pallet adhesives or which ones to use for your application, feel free to contact me through the Contact Us page on the website.

The Imprinted Sportswear Show is a great place to introduce yourself to the industry and get an idea of what screen printing is capable of as far as image reproduction. You can also get a very good idea of the costs of new equipment and the space requirements for it.

For more information directly from ISS, visit the website links above or you may send an email to: customer.serviceatlanta@nielsen.com and contact General Customer Service at 1-800-933-8735.
