Can You Start A Custom Printed Apparel Business With Heat Transfers?

Many people get the notion that they can start a printed tee shirt business using only a heat press with computer printed heat transfers. This is a common question I get asked on my website and I finally decided to address this topic with a closer look.

There are ways of making money with heat transfer processes. It is just a matter of either finding your niche or using the right transfer process. It is very risky and difficult to start a garment business with computer generated heat transfers. They are just not capable of producing the high quality results that demanding consumers are looking for. The computer printed, heat transfer style garment is best suited for novelty and point of sale situations. In these instances the customer is willing to settle for less of a product for the convenience of immediate satisfaction and/or memorabilia.

And in that very sector the direct to garment digital printer is becoming the latest standard with cutting edge technology that allows the computer to print the image directly onto the garment. Referred to as DTG or Direct To Garment Printing, this process is advancing fast and is capable of printing dark colored garments as well as the light colored shirts that ordinary computer printed heat transfers are limited to.

You may be able to find certain niches with computer printed heat transfers in which you can actually make some decent money. Some people do sublimation mugs and make a great side income for themselves. Your product line may include but is not limited to tiles, “dog tags”, license plates, ceramic mugs, light switch covers, clipboards, hardboard tiles, tote bags, plaques, neckties, travel mugs, ornaments, pet tags, business card holders, name badges, coasters, clocks and of course mouse pads.

For tee shirts the easiest way to achieve the best results with the least expense and without having to screen print yourself is to have plastisol transfers printed of the designs you wish to sell. All you have to do is stock the plastisol transfers and the blank shirts. Then press them as you get orders. You will be able to do whites, blacks or any color garment as well as most any style of garment. You can even have them made for baseball caps if you have a cap heat press. The plastisol heat transfer is the next best thing to screen printing without all of the costs and labor. I know of no other heat transfer process which can achieve the same results as screen printing except for plastisol heat transfers.

The only drawback is that you have to have your designs printed and stocked ahead of time. You would also have to stock all the various garments you wish to offer. Then you can press the plastisol heat transfers with a standard heat press at the time of sale. But I think this option is the best and least expensive method of breaking into the printed apparel industry without the risk of ruining your name and reputation using inferior computer generated heat transfers.

It is always best to do your research. Don’t let start up heat transfer business companies persuade you into a process that they will promise you it can do what screen printing can do. Sadly, that is most often not the case. There is a lot of good information on the internet about heat transfers, but there is also a lot of bad information. Just take the time to learn all about your options when considering starting a custom printed garment business.

Reusing Screens: Are You Having Reclaiming Problems?

It is very difficult to diagnose problems in screen printing without seeing what is going on but I will try to point out a few things that may be a problem when reclaiming screens for screen printing.

First of all you need to make sure your stencil remover is compatible with your emulsion. In some instances, certain stencil removers will not work on specific emulsions due to chemical incompatibility.

Next, it is possible that the screen is very old and the emulsion has been on the screen for years. If this is the case, the screen may be ruined, especially if it was well used and exposed to many solvents over a long period of time, (years).

Another reason emulsion refuses to reclaim is when someone sprays the screen with stencil remover with the intentions of reclaiming it but forgets to do it. The screen dries with the emulsion and stencil remover on it and hardens to such an extent that it will not reclaim after that.

You could try soaking the problem screen in household bleach. Many emulsions can be removed that way. Also, you will need a pressure washer for problem screens. Garden hose pressure is most often not enough to do the reclaiming job. I would recommend using a pressure washer for all of your reclaiming needs. It will make things a lot easier.

Make sure to explore the entire Catspit website for more articles about reclaiming screens. There are also several videos which cover reclaiming screens. The videos contain tips and advice for reclaiming screens and the articles on the website supplement and support the videos.

So make sure to search the Catspit website using the Search Catspit Site function to find more specific information you are looking for. If all else fails, contact me and I will point you in the right direction.

Catspit Productions & The ISS At Long Beach

As many of you in the screen printing industry know the Imprinted Sportswear Show is coming up on January 22-24 in Long Beach, California. As I push forward with making videos, I want to include as much professional instruction and education as possible. A great place to make videos like that is the show at Long Beach.

I will be going to the show to network and meet people. I am hoping to spread the word about my project and make some great videos for the YouTube channel. The show is a great place to see demonstrations of techniques and equipment. There will be a ton of cutting edge equipment and tools. Many of the top competing screen printing equipment manufactures and consumables suppliers will be exhibiting there. And of course, there will be representatives from the textile industry as well.

If you live in the area or you plan on going to the show this year, feel free to connect with me before hand. I would love to meet anyone who wants to meet up. I’d also like to make a video of our meeting for the YouTube channel. If you are interested, please contact me through the website Contact Us form.

Any appearances in videos must be accompanied by a model release form. I will provide these to anyone who is willing to make a video with me. I look forward to going to the show this year. I hope to get some great videos for you all to learn from and enjoy!

New Screen Printing Video Uploaded To YouTube!

Happy new year to everyone and welcome to the first of the screen printing videos for 2010 from Catspit Productions. The holidays were pretty good here and I hope you enjoyed yours as well.

The first video for the new year is a fun time collapse of reclaiming 6 screens. Take a look at what it is like to reclaim several screens in a row. Get an idea of the time involved as you can watch a clock in the video as well.

This is a fun video with music that demonstrates a common daily task in a screen print shop. You will notice how I have to bend over a lot to work and it is exhausting. A real washout booth at waist level would alleviate this problem.

I look forward to doing as many screen printing videos as I can this year. Thanks to everyone for all of your support!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to everyone. Thanks to all of the visitors to the Catspit website. Thanks to all of the YouTube viewers and subscribers too! It has been a great year for the YouTube channel and the website is also doing very well with statistics growing every month.

I am hoping the new year will bring added success and good fortune for Catspit Productions as we push forward with the internet project and continue to print commercially in the local Chandler area.

Thanks again to everyone who has supported, nurtured, advised and helped me out by giving as much of themselves as they could. It takes a lot of networking and bridge building to succeed in today’s mass media market place. I am happy to be working with the people I am to form strong business relationships and prosper together in the coming years.

Best wishes to all! Thanks for all of your support!

Graphics Software For Beginners

Many people ask me which graphic art software I use. I actually use Illustrator, Corel Draw and sometimes Photoshop. However, I would suggest Corel Draw for anyone starting out because it is a bit easier to learn and user friendly. The Corel package has all of the same functions as Photoshop and Illustrator, although Photoshop may handle photo retouching a little better. And it has a moderate learning curve. You will still need to learn a lot about the program to successfully do what you want but in general it is easier to learn than Illustrator.

There are many tutorial videos about creating art for screen printing on YouTube. You may want to look at a variety of tutorial videos on Illustrator, Photoshop and Corel Draw to help make your decision. There are quite a few of these. You can start with my favorites list and check out the artwork tutorials there and then look at the related videos to find more. Or you can do a YouTube search for them too.

The bottom line is you will need graphics software that handles vector art. The generic file format for vector art will be EPS which stands for encapsulated post script. This is the file format that you would request from your clients. I will most likely write an article for the website about this sort of thing in the near future.

New Entertainment Video Uploaded To YouTube!

A new video has been uploaded to YouTube this morning. This video is part of our entertainment series which is designed to amuse our current viewers and subscribers while at the same time introducing Catspit Productions to a new audience that may have never stumbled upon us due to video content.

This video features the Catspit aquarium. That’s right, take a look at the community fish tank I use to calm my nerves during stressful times. This is a rather long video for the content but it is great quality so you can go full screen and relax away all your stress while watching the fish do their thing. And there is a very comforting marine like audio track to accompany it. Put this video on full screen at bed time and it will help you fall asleep. Because it is relaxing… not because it is boring!

By uploading entertainment videos of different subject matter, the Catspit Productions channel will enjoy some added exposure from other sectors or niches on YouTube. The point is to attract other viewers and subscribers who are not searching for screen printing related videos.

I hope all of our current subscribers and viewers enjoy these videos as they are a peak into some of my personal interests. Look for more of these periodically in the future.

Happy Holidays From Catspit Productions!

Here in the United States it is Christmas day and the New Year is right around the corner. I just wanted to take the time to thank everyone who has supported Catspit Productions by subscribing to YouTube, visiting the website, reading this blog, and of course purchasing a genuine Catspit brand printed garment.

I would also like to thank everyone who rates and comments on the YouTube videos. This is very important and making a video your favorite is also very appreciated. And thanks to all who have taken the time to post a comment in the Guestbook or send an email directly to me through the website. Your gratitude and praise are appreciated and it gives me the drive to keep going with this project.

It has been a great year for the YouTube channel which is performing very well for its age. In January, the YouTube channel will be 1 year old. In that time we have achieved what others have failed to in 3 or 4 years. The website is also doing very well for only being 9 months old. The statistics are growing every month.

As you may have guessed, I receive a lot of questions through the website and YouTube. I answer them all in detail. But, that means it takes about  a day to two days for me to respond. So, if you were to ask a question today, it would likely be answered by  Sunday. I respond to all inquires and contacts in the order they are received so just please be patient.

Once again, thanks to everyone who supports Catspit Productions in any way. I appreciate all of your positive feedback. Please help Catspit Productions grow by spreading the word. Place a link on your social networking page or website and install the Catspit widgets anywhere you can too. Your help to spread the word is essential to the future of the Catspit website. As more people find out about the site and visit it, I will be able to add more information and resources to it.

Thanks so much for visiting the website and watching the Catspit videos! Look for a new entertainment video on Monday. The next screen printing video will be uploaded in January.

Thanks for reading! And Happy Holidays to all!
