This is another educational screen printing video about Ranar presses. In this tutorial video I cover leveling the base of the press along with leveling the pallet arms. Then we take a look at how to properly set the pallet to the pallet arm. After some initial set up adjustments are made you can then look at the printing set up with off contact and screen angle. In the video I show you how to set these adjustments on the Elite Series II screen printing press. It will be very similar for the Vista Series II presses as well. I also show you how to loosen the micro registration in the event that it is a bit tight from the factory. But this is a much shorter video just showing you how to use screen openers on press to remove clogs in the stencil. Here we simply re-examine the 2 most common ways to apply screen opener. Of course there really is no wrong way to use it as long as it’s working properly and not doing any damage to anything. There is one method that is actually on the directions of most screen openers and there is another method that is more controlled. However I wanted to simplify some things and add a few personal notes on the different types of squeegees. Have you ever wondered what the colors mean? This is a great summary rundown of squeegee durometer, size and metal versus aluminum. It’s a great tutorial video to get you familiar with screen printing squeegee. Many people do not pay much attention to details like the specifics of squeegees but in the end it can help make printing tee shirts or other substrates easier and more consistent. It will take some time for you to get familiar with choosing your squeegee for each particular screen printing job but eventually it will become second nature. You’ll end up having many squeegees of different sizes, durometers and even handles. It’s nice to be able to choose from wood or metal handled squeegees with different printing applications.

Here’s another educational screen printing video about poor print resolution caused by emulsion’s inability to bridge the grid pattern of the screen mesh. This is often called “sawtoothing.” Most of the time we see this on 110 mesh counts and lower. Usually this is not much of a problem since we put less detailed artwork on lower mesh counts. But it can be a problem if you experience this when trying to achieve fine lines, curves, circles and any type of smooth, high resolution artwork. This video explains exactly what sawtoothing is and how you can prevent it. I included some of my own home made graphics to help you visualize this as well as a few up close images of a 110 mesh screen with an emulsion stencil. Here’s another educational screen printing video about creating artwork for printing tee shirts. In this video I give you a pretty thorough rundown on the practice of using vector clip art for creating tee shirt artwork. So if you do not know how to create vector art from scratch, then you’ll want to learn about vector clip art which anyone can use to create some very cool screenprinting tee shirt graphics. This is a summary video and I left a lot of things out just to show you the concept of working with clip art. But check out my tips and video links below for some info that may fill in some gaps for you.
1 – If you’re doing a 1 color piece of art and you want to print straight from Illustrator or Corel Draw, make 100% CMYK black objects with everything you create. See this video for more on that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onEAPXahCp4
2 – If you want to do a color composite on one layer in order to let RIP software do the separations, then make sure all the colors are true spot colors and/or spot color gradients.
3 – If you want to create a multi-color piece of art in a similar way that I was showing in this video, remember you will need to “knock-out” the artwork in such a way that only what you want prints. In this case we would have had to “knock-out” the circle in the rectangular shapes on the 3rd layer in order for them to print with a knocked out space for the circle. Follow? Don’t worry, I’ll do a follow up video and show a simple way of doing that.
4 – You can manipulate the clip art as much as you want as well. With a 1 color set up, try to change the objects to all 100% CMYK blacks. But be aware that doing so on complex pieces of clip art can be challenging. Strange things can happen due to hidden objects or the way the art was created.
